Reverse v6/8?

Postby FST4RD » Sun Sep 25, 2011 3:50 pm

Just thinking out loud again... been thinking about this for a bit.
Has anyone gotten hold of a V6 or 8, managed to swap the heads over so the exhaust exits into the middle and the intake is on the outside?
Reason I say this is that if this was the case you could run a dirty big high mount turbo right in the middle of the motor, then you would have 2 intake plenums, 1 for each bank.

I'm assuming it would be possible?
Anyone done it?

BMW has in the new X6M and M5.
Brute force and ignorance always prevails.

Failure comes from too little brute force, or too little ignorance.

I would have thought for a non turbo it would be pointless seeing as the exhaust would have to get up and over the engine and down either side.

Someone did it to a holden V6 in a stock car a few years back, used 2 l/h heads (or maybe 2 r/h?)

I just think instead of a big supercharger sticking out the middle of your bonnet you could have a filthy big turbo

This sort of swap is done frequently in Touring Car classes (BTCC, British Touring Car Champoinship).

They swap the head around so that the intake faces forward and exhaust points towards the bottom of the firewall (if it's not already like this)
They do this to reduce weight, lower centre of gravity and simplify air supply to the airbox/intake

The oil galleries, water galleries don't line up so they supply oil/water seperately rather than via the block.

They use custom cams for peak power and so its easy to arrange flanges for camwheels etc. at the correct end of the camshaft.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

who said anything about non turbo :P

i wonder if it would be easier to rearrange timing somehow, or the cams so that the inlet valves become the exhaust valves and vice versa.

whats the benefit supposed to be on that stock car? looks farkin messy :P

Has anyone seen a V6/8 with both exhaust manifolds facing inwards?

fj40cruzapete - cool engine setup!

Running a flat plane crank? - I guess that setup makes it easier to pair up the correct cylinders for the exhaust manifold?

I think thats one of the advantages that BMW are exploiting with their new V8s, they run twin twin scroll turbos mounted between the banks - its still cross plane, but they can have alternating pulses fed into separate scrolls of each turbo so there is no pulse collision without needing to do huge exhaust manifold plumbing all around the block.

more common on the Yank Diesel V8's. packaging would be an issue i'd imagine in anything you cant poke the exhaust directly out the back (or in a yank tank truck)
