ae85 powersteering rack to manuel advise

Postby shihad » Thu Oct 06, 2011 11:48 am

my power steering rack is dying so im going to switch to manuel.
just after some advise if anyone has done this before.
so i believe i need
either
ke70 or aw11 manuel rack
use my ae85 inner/outer tie rod ends.
MK3 supra or ke70 intermediate shaft modified to suit.or would a ke70 1 bolt in?
t3 bushing http://technotoytuning.com/productdetail.php?p=112
any advise would be greatly appreciated.

yeh you've pretty much got it.

i shortend the ps steering uni section and welded uni back on. to fit manual rack. but pretty sure thats illegal even tho they are welded from factory.
*fake edit: i may have used kp60 stuff / above probably isnt much help to you

if you want more lock you can use a kp starlet housing, with the ae, ke, aw internals as you suggested. as will alow rack to travel further. plus will be all legit

If your rack's passenger end sleeve bearing/bushing is good, just gut its hydraulic stuff, adjust play in the pinion to rack clearance, grease it & go.

You will have to remove all evidence of power steering or it will fail a wof

Went through all that when i did my AE85.

throughout the whole conversion process the P/steer was the biggest issue,

I could not buy power steer lines for any amount,
and manual stuff needed was at least
crossmember
rack
steering knuckles
and column
to do it properly.

In the end I spent ages modifying bit and pieces and made some lines and got the p/steer to work.

i converted my ae70 from ps to manual rack as like matt i couldnt get lines from anywhere at all.

needed:

T3 ps to manual bush adapter
manual rack
manual column, as run different size shaft from memory.

keep the PS steering knuckles as will give you more steering lock as they are like 30mm shorter, steering will be heavier tho.
