settign 4age timing

Postby dxtawagon » Thu Oct 06, 2011 8:38 pm

hey quick question.
i need to set the timing on my bluetop 4age.
i understand i need to bridge T and E1 terminals to cut the ECU advance on the dizzy to set the base timing to 10deg.
My question is - where do i find these terminals?
Its in a NZ new GT if that makes any difference.
thanks

Do you have the black rectangle shape "DIAGNOSTICS" plug near the l/h strut tower? Or a couple of yellow plugs?

you'll either be looking for this - haven't looked at one for ages but from memory one wire will definitely be brown and the other blue/white I think.

or this -

if you have the yellow plug, just run a wire between both terminals to short them out. if you have the black box, just find the correct terminals inside there to short out (there are a whole heap of terminals inside it). either plug will be somewhere in the engine bay itself.

you'll want the car at operating temp with the throttle fully closed and accessories off too as i recall.

dont think i've ever seen a bluetop with the diagnostics box, do they exist?

ok,
I set it this morning (at operating temp) to 10deg when E/T1 were bridged.
It was the small yellow plug up behind the passengers strut tower by the way.
when i bridged these and turned the car on the engine light would flash periodically, so i assume i had the correct plugs bridged.

I didnt make sure the throttle was closed? how do i do this? the revs were sitting at about 1000rpm which is where it normally sits unless REALLY warmed up i.e. sitting in traffic where it drops to about 750rpm.

A/C was off but i think the stereo may have been on. I can re-check it this arvo with all accesories off.

after adjusting to 10deg with it bridged, it advanced to about 15deg when not bridged (at idle).

Cheers

They sure do coz I'm the other way around. Only ever seen the yellow plugs on the net!

Didn't notice the bluetop part in the OP

I've only ever seen the yellow plugs on the bluetop and black boxes on the redtop onwards.

To make sure your throttle is fully closed back the adjustment screw right off on the throttle body. The butterfly can get a bit sticky sometimes so might pay to "close" it by hand too rather than relying on the 20 year old spring to pull it right back, just to make sure it is completely shut. Doesn't take much for it to effect the revs.

This is good... means you were in diagnostic mode.
