Diesel Hiace Problem

A mate has an 08 Hiace 3.0TD. He ran it out of diesel it his driveway yesterday, so we got some more fuel, bled it up but it still wont run. We bled from fliter to pump, pump to rail and rail to each injector so pretty sure all the air is out of the system.

Sometimes it will fire and run at idle for about 3 seconds then shut off, not splutter and die, just shut off like you've turned the key off. Trying to give it revs makes no difference, just idles then dies.

The battery ran down a fair bit so we towed it approx 500m trying to get it running and nothing. Have checked all appropriate fuses and they're all good, and you can hear the electronic lift pump running, theres plenty of fuel at the injector lines.

Any suggestions? Sounds like something electronic to me but I'm far from an expert on EFI diesels.

It's not a common rail Diesil is it?


You know that on them every time you crack an injector pipe you must replace them, as they are crush type fittings on them to get them to seal?

Other than that you need to pump the primer on the filter under the passengers seat till it is hard,
and the someone cranks it while someone else pumps it during cranking as much as possible.


there is also the possibility that it has logged a code and now wont run til it is cleared.

common rail diesel's often have check valves in the base of the delivery lines, the shut off the fuel if there is a leak,
quite often the case when the lines are cracked and havent reseated correctly
it may not look like a leak but even a few drops of fuel can be enough for the check valves to close and stop fuel delivery.

they should reset by them selves, sometimes they stick. and must be replaced

common rail delivery lines should never be undone, and if so replaced

NEVER Crack the pipes on a common rail diesel while running ever!!

If you take the pipes off the injectors they don't need to replaced, only if you replace the injector or the common rail.

If you have run it out of diesel it may of stuck the suction control valve (SCV) in the pump which is fairly common. As the SCV has very tight clearances and the diesel lubricates the valve.

It may of stored a code which may point to the fuel pump. If you can get a hold of a scan tool you can see Actual fuel pressure against Target fuel pressure which may give you an indication on the fault.

Didnt crack them while running so thats no problem.

Update: Its been at Toyota all week, first they thought he may have refilled with petrol but after draining the tank, ruled that out. Tried to run diagnostics but Ecu was shutting down when engine stopped clearing all codes.

So now it looks like it was just a coincidence that it was really low on fuel, and the ECU could be toast. They are trying to find a replacement to try.

tell them to check the suction control valve sticking ive seen it a few times. Get them to check actual fuel pressure against target fuel pressure and log it using intelligent viewer with IT2 :wink: they will know what you mean when you tell them this.

isuzu and jd engines, there suction control valves have a lot of trouble when run out of fuel as well,

and they all seem to have heaps of trouble when the fuel isnt really clean, an extra, decent water trap filter seems to help
