I want to put either some German or japanese kill markings on my P-40 but have been warned against this as it can be deemed "in-appropriate" and offensive to some.

As a general cross section of the population (tho mostly males and tom-boys).

As there was a BF-109 in queenstown with english and commonweath kill markings which was told to remove them if he was to be in any airshows.

Would you as members of the public find it offensive??

I can see it being offensive but wouldn’t it be like not acknowledging that wars have ever happened?

It's a war plane.

They were used to kill people.

People need to suck it up!

I'd lean towards it being inappropriate, especially weighing it up against necessity. I can't see what function it'd serve beyond being a windup for Japanese and Germans and a discredit to true war heros on both sides of the fence, its not a restoration of how the P-40s were originally constructed and within decent taste or not - the markings were an actual indication of battle successes that individual pilot/plane had in war risking their very real lives and taking other very real lives in the process.

Guess it depends on whether you are celebrating engineering, or bloodshed.

When i was in Pearl Harbour there were hundreds of Japanese tourists and they weren't moaning about the flags on the USS Bowfin. Majority were Japanese and if anyone was to moan, it should be them!

Different from what I am saying, that thing was ACTUALLY in the war - its a piece of history from what was very real at the time. This machine is just an expensive model toy.

Probably because there would have been people there who saw it happen first hand.

How about some fake humour ones? Maybe you could have Honda badges as kill symbols? or $ signs? lol

Are you making your plane a replica of a certain p40? I would put the markings on as thats what the real planes had.

should only have markings if its a genuine WWII plane, not a replica.

you or the plane hasn't killed anyone thus you / the plane havn't earned kill markings

I agree with the whole "the p-40 didnt shoot them down so it doesnt deserve them" but in the same respect it does make the plane more "period"

lots of models have those decals, i dont find them offensive.
i thought about doin something similar for my car.

I say, if you want to do it, do it.

example, my brother made an appropriate stand for his model of the bismarck

models is one thing... an actual aeroplane, thats a bit different. my first thought was who cares, but then i read liths comment and changed my mind! well said sir.

i see in your bulid thread you state this is a 75% replica?
does that mean teh other 25% may or may not have genuine serial numbered parts out of a real p-40?

if yes

go for gold with the badging of the kill markings, providing serial numbers fly in a war plane and not in some polit training aircraft?

just throwing it out there

75% is the scale, its 75% the size of a real p40. it will maybe have 2% real parts
