My Caldina GT-T has been leaking a fair amount of oil lately. Wondering if there are any typical places it'd leak from.

I had a bit of a nosey underneath today, thought it could be coming from the oil filter, as oil is dripping from around that area. but it's also leaking at the back end of the sump too (I think).

Thoughts?

Numerous places.

The crankshaft main seal is one location I've seen before. It ends up dripping from the sump flange (after running halfway round the engine) and is a bugger to track down.

Amen to that, the rear main on my SE104 s/5SGTE became badly pitted and would only leak badly under high cornering forces, the rest of the time it was only enough to make things attract dirt and go gungey. the leak appeared to actually be coming from the inlet manifold even though that is impossible.

Mine doesn't leak!! (now)

I had leak issues after I overhauled the engine. Took me damn near 50000kms to track down. Turned out to be a fine circumferential hairline crack in the o-ring groove of the distributor. The dizzy was off a used import motor and it had a broken dizzy cap when I got it. I suspect it took a hit when piled in the container, just not quite enough to snap it.

On my ST165 the distributor actually snapped off at the same location in-situ. Never explained that one.

Speaking of which the distributor o-ring is another common location. If you have oil inside your distributor it is the lip seal inside the dizzy.

I think you could be right with the crankshaft seal. Was going through 2L of oil every few days. Need to fix it, so I can drive it again. How hard is it to get to?

More the point, can I be bothered fixing it myself?

it is an engine and box out of the car onto the floor job. ideally you need access to a hoist and a free weekend......

Check the oil filter if its going through that much, might be weeping out the seam

Difficult enough, much heavier then the front seal stuff but less complicated, and something you should be very sure about as the source/s of the lube, no guessing allowed.

Oil filter tight????

If it's got too much crankcase pressure, it'll leak. From anywhere it can.
Likewise if the crankcase is in vacuum, it won't leak even with worn seals. That's because the air will leak inwards.
Maybe it's got broken ringlands?

steam clean engine bay and then start monitoring for oil leak area. Will be a lot easier to locate instead of trying to figure out past the grime that is already there.

I have access to a hoist... free weekend? not so much

How hard is it to get a 3sgte out of a Caldina?

Usually the easiest way is to use a hoist and drop the whole engine and trans out the bottom

If it goes through 2l of oil every few days it must be pretty much dripping out as its idling.

So I would clean the hell out of the engine, make it prisitine, jack it up and have the car leveled out on axle stands, start the engine and watch it with a really good light. Since the car is only idling theres not as much air flowing past etc to blow the oil everywere which means you should be able to see the trail clearly.
