we've had 3+ year old petrol which smelt and burnt fine. and i've also had 12 month old gas which has been pungent and truely gone off

Moist decent coolants are 5 year/100,000 so ought to be fine. Just change the brake fluid and gas and do skids

I have an adapter that lets me plug the car into the mains to recharge the battery. The battery is fairly new

Would make sense if the battery had been connected the whole time it was in storage, would be deader than a dead thing if so. If not then it'll be fine, batteries can (and do) sit for months no problem

Carburettors are a bit different because the float bowls are vented, the carby will corrode and the white powder created will block the jets.
Modern cars, the tank is effectively sealed, the vent being through the carbon canister, unless it's been removed.

Just fire it up, done it many a time, Batteries never loose their "charge" it's just another internet myth.

Fuel will go off over time, being exposed to air makes it go off faster, eg in a carb the fuel in the bowl will go off faster than in the tank, and systems with a charcoal canister will be even slower.

Over 12 months in a system with a charcoal canister you should be fine, like strx7 said, just run it low then put fresh stuff in it, maybe change the fuel filter as well once you put fresh gas in just incase it picked up some crap from the bottom.

If its turboed then I wouldnt be thrashing it till it has some new fuel in it incase its volatility/octane has been reduced.

Thats my thoughts anyway.

There is often crap floating around in the tank, the lower the fuel level the less fuel it has to float in and the more chance it get sucked up the fuel line.
