Removing Poked screws

Postby thornz » Tue Nov 15, 2011 1:33 pm

Not for a 1:1 car, but for my RC Car, need to remove a 3mm screw with a snapped head.

Head was rounded, so tried haxsawing a groove into it to use a flathead driver, only for the head to snap off completely.

So, now have the screw stuck in there with nothing to grip. Do I need to drill it right out and then re tap it? I have seen things like easy outs, but cant seem to find anything locally that goes down to a small enough size.

Any other suggestions on what to try?

Tracking down a new hub may prove the simplest option, assuming it is something common?

Seeing as that's part of the crankshaft you probably wouldn't be able to re-thread it. Think it would be possible to weld another bolt to it?

Am going to try drill a hole in it, then use a left hand screw into that small pilot hole, and fingers crossed with a bit of heat to melt the loctite, it will come out. Otherwise can hacksaw the end of the crankshaft off and put on an extensions.

What brand engine is it? Could you order a new crank?

What kind of metal? Possible to weld something to it? Have done that in the past on a bolt down in a hole. The heat of the short tack weld made getting it out a piece of piss. If it's just steel i'm sure I could tack a nut on it for ya.

Going by that pic it would be a lot easier than the last screw I tacked on to. It was down about 5mm from flush down a hole. Worst case would have a few tacks on top of each other then just vice grip the now (hopefully) loose screw.

I ain't no expert but if it was mine I'll left hand drill bit + bench press drill
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.
