Dont be so sure, Ive replaced 3 engine due to a cat breaking up and bits ging back into the engine rooting the bores.

stupid question if your exhaust wheel blew up why would there be shraps in your engine and WTF does the cat have to do with it? i be trolling but since when did shit go into your exhaust

The turbine spins at 100000-150000rpm at full boost, if it blows the shards travel faster than speed of sound (ceramic shrapnel) it could ricochet back into the head and get in combustion chamber.

Additionally if cat is close to the head, vacuum pulses +vibration could get ceramic honeycomb fragments up stream and into the head.

Don't be silly. The shards go through closed exhaust valves and in the opposite direction of exhaust flow? It's the exhaust flow that spins the turbine in the first place.

Dude think about the speeds and physics involved.
Pieces of the wheel have far more energy/mass/inertia than the exhaust gases.
Being ceramic I guess they would shatter into rather small pieces and go flying in all directions and ricochet around.
So, how could they NOT end up back in the cylinder?

Heh, looking at most standard manifolds, I struggle to see how the exhaust gasses even get to the wheel, let alone have anything come back! :D

I'm sure it's entirely possible if you're really unlucky but I'd imagine it's very very rare/unlikely for it to happen. To get into the cylinder, it has to travel out of the volute in the turbine (which is designed to accelerate things in one direction only), travel up the exhaust manifold (as before), then travel to the exhaust valves and enter the combustion chamber - all while working against the maze it has to travel (it's not a straight line and each time it collides with something it's losing a lot of inertia/energy) and high pressure exhaust gases that provide the force to turn it to astronomical speeds in the first place...

It would be like walking to the fan in a wind tunnel with your arms outstretched while wearing a BASE jumping suit. I've heard of a few people saying turbine wheels disintegrating have damaged their engines but I've personally never seen any proof of this. Seen more than enough RB turbine wheels that have smashed their way apart and ended up sitting in the downpipes not doing a hell of a lot though...

I think I destroyed my first turbine wheel in about '83.
Don't use mild steel fabricated manifolds, they rust from the inside out when parked up. Over time the rust will flake off and go through the turbine when you open it up. If it doesn't cause damage, it certainly doesn't do anything good.
Or maybe it's the turbine shitting itsself , pieces going the wrong way up the manifold and causing it to rust?

The wheel falls off as a whole first (snaps at the base of the wheel where the shaft meets the housing), and then it tumbles while it's rotating.

IDK, I just know I had a fuct engine and I found bits of turbo in my cylinders.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

i dunno, are you real? would you know if he had seen you? how do you know the pyramids of ejypt are real? is that a trick question? i've never heard of ejypt.

i think the earths core is a poor example actually, even scientists disagree on what it looks like :P

anyway, you missed my point. which is not that surprising given sarcasm can be difficult to convey via text. but i was taking issue with magn1t deriding the opinions of others while extolling the virtues of his own, which are often based at best on highly anecdotal evidence.

He wasn't the only one, I thought you were seriously backing him up as well.. perhaps an appropriate emoticon would be in order next time!

I agree, the energy in a turbine wheel travelling at over 100,000rpm is immense.. If a wheel let go, you've got possibly supersonic pieces of ceramic/steel heading everywhere with far more energy than the wind resistance from the exhaust could dissipate.. much like a bullet ricocheting, it doesn't matter what way the wind is blowing.

I have also had turbine wheel bits lodged in the piston causing a decent tapping noise with the piston reached TDC. (can provide pics if needed)
