Which Colour Scheme for the P-40

Postby kiwi4agze » Thu Nov 24, 2011 10:57 am

I have to hand in the forms to the CAA in regards to the colour scheme for the P-40. I am stuck between 4 schemes:

Option 1:
Flying Tigers

Option 2:
SAAF

Option 3:
USAF North Africa

I'm leaning towards option two over optoin one, given it's more reflective of your background.

Teeth... Seriously it would be a crime not to, and I have spent more of my fair share around WW2 planes.
My uncle was the chap heading the build on the Hurricane that they just finished restoring, and another uncle built the replica Spitfire at the begining of the Chch airport. Old man was in the airforce for 25 years and mum was in the airforce for a decade so got to spend a lot of tme around planes :)

where is the option where you make up your own mind about your project and stop flaunting your wealth?

Pass... it's the one that they restored from pretty much scrap, gave to ummm forgot that old guys name, had heaps of WW2 planes, crashed a spitfire.
All the guys that built it got real pissy cause he wanted to sell it and it looks like it's going to go overseas :(

Bit harsh... who cares if he's flaunting his wealth? I see EMZ Supra and jealous of it because of what it's worth and what she's done with it, obviously she has worked very hard to get there though, same with Kiwi4agze...
I'm enjoying reading up about his P-40 project, makes a nice change from all the same old cars (no offence there are some very nice cars on here!).

I would love to come up to Nelson and take a gander at your P-40. Spent my whole life around planes and looking forward to seeing this one getting on :D

Tim Wallis.
He crashed because he was used to his early Spitfire that was Merlin powered. The one he crashed was powered by a Griffin (?) which rotates the other way. So on take off you need to correct the rotational torque of the engine and he automatically did it for the Merlin. With the result of ending up parked on his head. He suffered brain damage from that crash and I'm pretty sure that was the end of his flying.
He pretty much is single handedly responsible for the amount of warbrids in NZ. With out him Warbird over Wanaka would not exist.
He was also the patron of my ATC squadron and helped pay for us to go flying!
So IMO he is a legend.
