Turbo manifold paint?

Postby Adoom » Sat Nov 26, 2011 8:11 pm

Wondering what I could paint my cast turbo manifold and steel down pipe with, that won't get nuked the next time I go racing.... :?
Exhaust gets super hot at the track since it is on boost 90% of the time and has no chance to cool down.
Has anyone used anything that actually works?

Ceramic coating does a good job. Or alternately you can wrap them, both work well if done properly. The new titanium wrap not only works well, but is far far tidier than the traditional white/black stuff.

Cat muffler black works well only available from goughs thou,

VHT can be a bit hit and miss, often leaves a chalky white residue

They all work better when the material your painting is pre heated and hot while painting

If you are going to use any paint based system you really need to have the parts sand blasted if you want the paint to be durable.

I have used a stuff called Techline Black Satin (imported from demon tweeks). It is a small 120ml tin but I've done one 3S-GTE manifold, one turbo turbine housing, two downpipes and a set of Alfa 4 cylinder headers.

See attached pic. That downpipe was painted 10 years and 70000kms ago and the coating is still mostly OK. The O2 sensor nuts haven't fared so well given the ST205 bonnet grill means this area is exposed to the weather.

Oops just remembered that downpipe was done professionally so ignore above comment!

The coating still looks fairly good on the manifolds.

I used VHT flame proof exhuast paint on my dump pipe. Had to bake it etc.
Cheap, easy and it's still stuck on there... tho it has lines in it from where it sat on the oven rack :/
