The first Toyota sports or Performance/sports model since the MR-S. I'm actually quite excited on the prospect of a modern day AE86. The launch base version looks to be more about fun than outright performance with a tail happy chassis and less than sport tyre's.

Have talked with Toyota NZ..

197hp @ 7000 RPM
205nm @ 6600 RPM

Priced high 40's low 50's
Out here in Jan-Feb 2012

I am imagining it to be quite tame and very Japanese in n/a form with only 200nm at 6000rpm and am thinking a Turbo version must be in the pipeline.. Shame they cant just give it the power and grip from the factory, typically Japanese and needing modifying to get it going

I have just brought a brand new car so hope that in three years or so when im shopping for a new one again Toyota have a higher performance version available.

Have booked a test drive for this new one regardless 8)

Nice, good that they actually went through with them. I'm sure swapping in an EZ30R shouldn't be too much of a mission, would probably make them quite a bit of fun :)

That's whats cool and not so cool about this car in our market, they seem to have made a great base car, its like a plain cheese Pizza that needs a bit of topping to your taste. Problem is will costs the same as a Meat Lovers so we wont be able to afford/justify it.

It works in Japan and America where people in their late 20's and early 30's will be able to afford it and modify it with a plethora of cheap aftermarket kits but here in NZ it will end up just plain expensive, impractical and slow and the people who will buy it will be the Mazda MX5 demographic, women in their 50's and middle aged men buying a car for themselves of heir wives that want a bit of weekend fun.

I really hope this is not the case and if it was perhaps priced at what it should cost, say high 30's low 40's it might not be.

As stated the bulk will wait for used imports and hope and pray a few of those middle aged men and women opt for a Manual Gearbox at least!

Also, side note. Its near 2012 Toyota/Subaru, surely you could have at least fitted a double clutch gearbox in it so the "auto" option is still half good.

What are it's competitors?
The MX-5 and maybe the RX-8?
Both 50k+
I predict it will be in the 40s if we are lucky.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the bast model in the high 40s

From what the sales man told me it will be likely $49-50 for the base model and likely $55-56 for something with a better spec, likely Auto with Leather so lets say 50k for the one we would want.

Snaps wrote:^ You're getting a decent amount of car for your money there though...

I would not say its a decent amount of car, on paper its a poorly specked car with low power, low torque, cheap tyres, cheap interior and little else so its not great value there, on paper it could be a Kia Coupe at 25k with those specs and if you compare it to a new Subaru Impreza WRX at 45k-50k that is two seconds to 100 faster, better equipped, more practical and easier to live with day to day.

I think you could say its a lot of fun for your money, if it drives as it should do (cant wait to drive one) its a pure sports car and probably the cheapest of its kind on the market, it has a bespoke platform and the ability to make you smile like you would in a Porsche Cayman for less than half the money.

I really really hope its good to drive on Kiwi roads and its not going to be another modern Japanese lost in translation attempt at a sports car.

I have just brought the best value performance car currently available in that price range and can assure you if I was to trade back to a Toyota it will have to be very very good indeed.

Realistically, practically nobody here is in the $40k - $50k brand new vehicle market, even if they do call it something close to that of a 1984 car that was kind of fun (but slow, c'mon people it was a big port 4AGE ... they weren't a quick engine, and that's from a guy who has raced three big port stock Toyota's).

There might be one or two in TS as new vehicles, but I'd say that it's more likely that they start turning up here when they're 5 years old. Up until then, it's an academic argument about a car we don't want / can't afford.

I'm enough of a Toyota nerd that I realised that afterwards, and thought about going back to edit it. Then decided CBF!

As you pretty much just said, these sort of cars shouldn't be judged by numbers, they should be judged by things like driver involvement, steering feedback, i.e everything to do with a car being "fun". It shouldn't be judged on how fast it goes 0-100, or how fast it does a 1/4 mile - both of which are "on paper" measurements, and really almost entirely useless in the real world.

That said - even on paper it has some good points - Fuel efficient (D4-S 2.0L), cheap to maintain (less weight = less brake pads, less wear on clutch, tires, etc.), Dual Zone Climate Control (optional).

When you start comparing it to something like a 2.0L 4WD Impreza, it's actually pretty impressive, where the GT86 (production name) has ~60hp more, 150kg's less, lower CoG, FMR layout instead of FA/F4 layout, probably better overall driving feel, then it looks to me like you're getting a better deal with the '86.

Even compared to a WRX, it's not bad - not everyone wants an AWD car, it's not down on power too much compared to the WRX, it's a good 300kg's lighter....etc. etc.. I'm sure you get my point.

I guess what I'm saying is that these cars are in different categories. There are very few cars that follow the same lines as the 86 - Apart from the Mazda MX-5, what other NEW cars are in this category for roughly the same price? Lightweight, fun to drive isn't exactly in the vocabulary of most manufacturers at the moment, because the majority of people are not car enthusiasts like the people of Toyspeed...

Being new doesnt seem to relevant seeing as how as mentioned, most will be 5 year old imports coming into NZ.

Still doubt it would be a better car to drive than a gen 5 SW20...

Imagine driving either of the non FT86 cars below.

This is an approximation of the FT86 experience, less hype.

^ Numbers say a lot, would have said more if MS paint was used though Roman.

I guess it will come down to just how great the handling is. I am pleased they are making it, more ponies would have been nice, but I will look forward to when they are 3 or 5 years old.

Thoughts on Hyundai genesis, 1500kg but 280-odd HP iirc?

No MS paint? Dave fail

I don't think lack of stock HP will be an issue. Never has for anything else to anyone to really tries

Except those two cars will both FEEL old now - they both use "poor" quality vinyl for the dash, door cards, etc.. which is probably peeling or lifting after 15-20 years.

You'll also have a bloody hard time trying to find a clean one, in the color/interior combination you want, that hasn't been thrashed, has corners cut, etc.

They'll both have tired engine in the 100K kms+ range, not making as much power as they did when new, not to mention worn bushings, higher drag, less downforce, 90's panel gaps and 90's headlight lens' that make the exterior look poorer. Old lights with bad output vs. HID's and LED tails.

I could go on and on ;) Something about buying a new car is just better - maybe it's that you get to choose EVERY SINGLE OPTION yourself, so you can tailor the car to JUST how you want it - color, mechanical, exterior, interior options are all yours for the choosing. It also means you're getting the absolute newest and greatest car to come from a specific manufacturer at a specific time, of which the extra technology that has been learnt since the previous car has also been applied to. Once again, there is more to this car than just numbers!

Brandon
