1997 caldina gtt pinking?

Postby MRDOCA » Mon Oct 31, 2011 10:10 pm

Hey so recently bought this car after a very long run with Mazda familia turbos. It's nice to drive etc but have noticed its pinking/pinging quite abit at about 21/2 -3000 rpm. I'm running 95, so if the ecu isn't retarding the timing would it be safe to say the knock sensors had it? Or will this be something else? How do I check it out?

Thanks

Run 98 for starters.

When mine was pinking it was due to a broken air intake sensor.

Pull the efi relay / fuse thing too - imo it can run better after that (or disconnect the batt for a few mins).

How do you drive it?
Try giving it more rpms on higher loads (use lower gears).
If you never use the power the engine will carbon up. So stop nana-ing it and take it for good drive ;).
Always use 98.

I don't nana it trust me lol. I don't believe having to run 98 is the only way to fix it. It shouldn't need 98. I'll check the sensors And unplug battery and reply after

It's built for 100, run 98.

From memory they are fairly high compression for a turbo.

They don't like anything less than 98, piston shape and high compression are to blame

Stop listening to the media harping on about most cars don't need anything higher than 91.

It was designed for high quality 100 octane. It is a high performance turbo engine with resultant high pressures and temperatures in the combustion chamber. It will run on lower octane but performance and drivability will suffer.

Try 98 then report back if it still has issues.

9.0:1 static compression, on the high end of the scale.

Slightly unrelated but below is a comparison I did with a VVTi 1JZGTE which is another engine designed for 100. Red line is 95, blue line is 98. I could feel the difference and have the chart to prove it, notice the increase in torque:

Running it on 98 is something you should already be doing. Stop being a cheap arse. You abuse a highly strung turbo car on 95 fuel that is probably tuned for 100.

You could always put an aftermarket ECU on it and have it tuned to run on our crap fuel, but I don't see that as being a good fix really.

Ok decided to bump this thread. Now been running 98 for a while now and yes it doesn't do it as bad but still does it. Between 3-4000rpm only in every gear.
Starting to annoy me as I want to turn the boost up and start doing other mods/work to it but obviously can't due to this issue.

BZG said his had a broken air intake sensor when his was doing it, have you tried that?

Do these things run map or afm?

Every now and then there is a thread where a GTT owner is able to mod their car and have it go fine.

The other 90% of the time GTT's do no like their own standard engine let alone a modded one.

Put simply if you want more power out of your GTT then you MUST be happy risking its complete demise....

If you want a moddable wagon go buy an evo wagon or Stagea 260rs

if you want to modify a GT-T you start of with an aftermarket tuneable ecu, or you factory into the mods bending rods and or melting pistons, rebuilding for forged items and then forking out on top for a tuneable ecu.

I am well aware about what to do to mod cars I've been building and modding familias for years. But all I want to work out is why my car is pinking atm.

High boost, high compression, aggressive timing, shitty fuel and a bit of carbon build up.

Say it was carbon build up, what's the "best" product to clean that off without removing the head?

Thanks Sergei, I'll give that a try. Worse case scenario I'll have to put it on a diagnostics machine
