And another to throw into the mix

http://www.honda.co.nz/cars/crz/pricing/

A somewhat different car but the same target audience will end up choosing between them

The FT86 needs to be a sub-40k car here to make a dent in the market,

however at the end of the day the NZ market is tiny and insignficant in the greater scheme of things.

45k is a fair bit of money for what they are offering, a friend of mine last week drove off the lot in a brand new SV6 commodore with 210kw, leather and touchscreen nav for $39750

I agree, I think very few will sell here as new cars.

In a couple of years though, I think we may see a reasonable number come through as used imports.

The Commodore being more of a four door family car / towbeast isn't really the same target market as the 86 though. The more natural rivals would be something between the Nissan 370 (are they still only a 2 seater?) and the MX5 in the new car market. There isn't an exact parallel on the market that I can think of as a new car, which I guess says quite good things if the 86 can make some claim to being something unique in the new car market (four seater, two door, rear drive sports car). Actually, has the RX8 stopped production yet, as that's a car that fits much the same description - but I recall reading that production had or was stopping.

Looks like a munged CRX / Civic / Insight.

Agree with you on the price - there are a lot of options out there, but I think it'll come down to how well the FT86 drives. It looks cool (like the last gen celica), but if the drive isn't there the car simply won't sell (like the MR-S).

with 91kW it is not going to get anywhere, even if it is honda kW and not toyota kW.

Yip, 91kw is a bit a joke, would rather have a Suzuki Swift for 20k less than the Honda. Same power output, and probably just as fun to drive.

Sorry, I can't get excited about this car at all.
45K wouldn't be a bad price if the car had anything going for it.
To me this thing has hallmarks of a Hyundai/Honda cross breeding programme and is just plain ugly.
I wasn't a big fan of the AE86 either other than when selling one. About as boring as chicken soup but at least they had a purpose.
This FT86 thing has 'hairdresser' written all over it.

If there is a market, wheel makers will start making them to suit.

Seems a bit optimistic that wheel manufacturers will start pumping them out for one model of new car, multi-stud maybe.
It must have come from the subaru side of things to go with that stud pattern.

Most likely has very ghey offset so most awesome wheels won't fit anyway.

Yeah 4x114.3 three piece old school wheels with -8923746 offset aren't going to fit, but then it's a new car.

Still some good looking wheels around that suit, ie pic posted by loonie at top of page

I'm sure on some of the pictures I've seen the wheels look to be reasonably sunk in the guards so promising that low offset rims will work.

they probably choose the offset to suit the suspension set up and feel of the car (which seems to be high on the list of priorities) instead of the low offset look that is in fashion right now.
