What oil to use?

Postby Garreth27 » Tue Dec 13, 2011 1:39 pm

I got some cams made up by Frankiln cams for my 5efte starlet and was told to run some 20/50 sg oil by Adrian. Now i can't seem to find any SG oil and Have had a few places look at me with a blank look as they've never heard of it.

What would be the next equivalent oil to use thats available in nz

I'm pretty sure SG is like a minimum standard oils must comply too, and its up to SM now so pretty much any oil you buy will be up to SG standard

Just an old spec for minimum standards, WIKI says SN is the latest.

Some may want to use the older spec stuff because of reduced phosphate/whatever additive in the newer stuff is SUPPOSED TO BE less forgiving during breaking in flat tappet cams. Others think it is an urban legend/old wives tale.

You'll probably find something cheap at supercheap or the warehouse with an SG rating. As has been said, this is an old standard, and most brand name oils will be SL rated or better even in their mineral oils.

The grades after SG had a lower limit on the allowable limit of an additive called ZDP (Zinc Diphosphate or something like that) which is supposed to be really good at preventing metal on metal wear when the lubrication film breaks down.

So your choices are a budget oil that meets the old standard, that might have a higher ZDP level, or a brand name oil that meets the newer standard but definately wont have a high ZDP level.

how wild is your cam?

If its mild enough to run standard springs and retainers I probably wouldn't get too hung up on it.

Did you buy a new cam, or is it a regrind?

pretty wild, well for a starlet anyway, had to change to 4age springs etc. Ive been running some penrite 10w30 and after 1500km the cam lobes are starting to show some wear marks.

heavier oil might help.

Regrind, or new billet cam?

It's almost impossible for you to get 'wrong' oil unless its gear/hypoid oil, Castor bean oil, baby oil, ATF Dexron/Ford, power steering stuff or Oil of Olay.
There's no best or worst, just don't use stuff that's too thin for an old beater or too thick for anything in good condition that is going to be run hard before warming up.
There is nothing that will make any difference unless you really try hard to $&#$% it up. Is this an old engine with a new cam, with expectations of new engine performance & longevity?
Prime before starting, don't rev on first start after draining the pump's pickup & putting on an empty filter.
Good luck.
