Modifying seat rails

Postby diss7 » Sun Aug 21, 2011 11:41 pm

How would one go about making a seat slide further back than it can go from factory?
I have thought of taking the rails into a fabricator and asking him to extend the rails, but should I be concerned about weight/load on the floor mounts being outside what they were designed for. Surely at some point, The COG on the seat might be further back than the rear floor mounts?

Or, is there another way?
Changing seats is not an option, I want to keep my stock seat.

I'd suggest you're over-thinking it. Certainly you'll shift weight rearward by moving the seat further back, but I'm sure that unless you're talking about moving them back 200mm or something that it's not going to be a big issue.

Malcolm, I found with my Starlet it was an issue. Many of the Toyotas already slide well past the pivot point and excessively load the rails.

well then...disregard my statement

What issues did you have? Obviously the best solution if too much overhang is a problem is to shift the attachment points at the floor.

With the seat all the way back in my Corolla it feels like it wants to fall over backward under acceleration. Sometimes I do it just to make it feel faster.

Panelbeater said he couldn't shift the seat back safely without moving floor mounts and after a good look at the mounting points I had to agree. So WoF time will get expensive as I have to do an engine swap to justify the cert I will need.
Diss1dent, you will need to talk to an engineer in Oz as I doubt you will get a straight answer on legality in Oz on an NZ forum.

After taking the rail out I can see if it is going to put a lot of strain if I extend the current rail.
Instead, I think I'll get a new rail made up. It will be fixed, but I've taken some measurements of where I'd like the seat to sit.

When I did work experience at Toyota, they changed the rails on some starlets for a security company, as they had a few staff members that where rather large around the mid section

I had new rails made and they are working great. I need to take them back out and paint them, so will put some pics up.

Word of warning to anyone considering making new rails, make sure you are confident with your measurements. Mine sits back about 10mm more than I would like. I think it was because I took all my measurements when I had shoes on. When I drive with shoes its perfect, without shoes, its a little too far.
Also, because the seat went back so far, I couldn't get in behind to tighten the rear mounts, so had to go under the seat from the front. If I had've made the new rails a little higher, it would've made installation much easier.
