sup guys

just spent the past few weeks replacing my 4AGE, and got to the point of trying to start it today. on first attempt, it was turning over, but subsequent attempts have resulted in a TICKTICKTICK sound: http://verti.orcon.net.nz/4age-tickticktick.mp3

the starter was turning over by hand fine before being attached to the engine, and it was off my old one and working fine then also.

it sounds mechanical ;/ any ideas what it might be? im going to take the cambelt cover off now just to chekc that i havent broken that.

Try another battery?

I guess there can be multiple reasons for something to go tick tick tick, but I know flat battery is one of them. Hard to tell from the sound clip though as it sounds like the car is underwater.. :lol:

but tbh doesn't sound like battery. Always the first thing I try though.

Attach multimeter to battery and check what the voltage drops too while cranking. I've had one drop to 5V

Can you turn engine over by hand? Put a ratchet and socket on the crank pulley

Check little things like your efi fuse, you may have created a short at some point while installing/playing with battery wires and blown that.

crank turns over by hand freely, but there is a gear like sound coming from the starter motor i think.. think it might be stuffed. battery is reading ~14v, so thats actually ok.

anyone have a spare starter that i could test?

hehe. im suspecting that the starter motor is just plain $&#$%. pretty sure the earths are ok, but ill redo them to make sure.

I would try jump starting it or putting a new battery in before pulling the starter off...

Or as above, check the earths, make sure the battery terminals are connected properly. Had batteries do weird things in the passed, and sounds very similar to that.

Fixed! It was the engine block earth on the rad cap hose mount. Now the battery is flat
