AE92 Levin Electrical issues

Postby Insighttech » Tue Dec 27, 2011 7:09 pm

Some times when I start up the car I get the following warning lights coming on catalytic converter, battery and the taillight out. Some times it is ok. Some times when I restart the car they come on. Tested the battery and fuses and ithey are ok. When the lights are on? voltage reads on the car at just over 12V. When it is fine it's close to 14V. So I guess my alternator is stuffed? When the lights come on it's just barely charging at around 12.3V

So is their an easy removal process for a AE92 small port alternator, before I make hard work out of it or should I check something else first. Thanks

Check all connections are tight / not corroded first. Battery end, earths etc that sort of thing. Easy enough to quickly check, might not be the issue but at least rule it out before removing the alt.

in my AE92 and AW11 when the alternator regulator crapped out, that's what alerted me to it (all the idiot lights coming on)

^ +1 Alternator dying normally brings random lights up on the dash. Common Toyota thing.

Lol, there is nothing random about it.
Almost all the warning lights on the dash except the oil light use the alternator circuit for bulb check function, i.e. the alternator is what brings them on when you first turn the car on before you start it.
Also means when the alternator light comes on they all come on too.

Lots of cars do it not just toyota's.

Seen it more on Toyotas than anything else. Just about every other make I've had charging problems on bring up the battery light only when there is a charging fault. Not saying it ONLY happens on Toyotas, just saying it's a common sign on a Toyota that your alternator is on it's way out. Random was more alluding to the fact that they come up sometimes and not others. Perhaps not the best choice of word. Didn't think it would be a big deal. I apologise.

From memory pulle the alternator off the mount,
then pull the mount off the block, and then take them both out the bottom??

I have also taken it out the top, you may need to remove the brace though and it is a tighter fit but do-able.
