Advice on heat shielding solutions?

Hey guys,

Basically I've got a few areas of my car which I want to protect a little better from exhaust heat, and for the exhaust manifold I want some type of shielding that will stop radiant heat from cooking the engine bay or melting things or whatever.

Exhaust wrap seems PERFECT apart from the fact that the friggen stuff is useless and discintegrates almost just after you've finished putting it on. bah!

Ceramic coating of the exhaust manifold is an option, but $$ and does this wear off, or stop much in the way of radiant heat? I understand why/how it works but I cant help but be a little skeptical that such a thin coating can prevent a really hot manifold from radiating heat in the same way that exhaust wrap could...

For another area, I just want a patch of (xyz material) to be stuck to the underside of the car, so it's not being heated where the exhaust is very close.

Any reccomendations on what would suit, in each case? (that isnt exhaust wrap)

I had limited success heat wrapping the 2-1 section and then hose clamping a 1mm thick aluminium sheet around it to protect it, but this isnt going to work for the 4-2 section where the shape is more complicated.

Ive heard good things about that stuff, havent tried it myself but should work good for shielding other parts. Also seems pretty easy to shape/mould.

I just use a a bit of 3mm aluminium sheet as a shield over my manifold and turbo. Makes a noticeable difference to radiant heat.
Without it, all the metal around around it gets hot to touch.

You using the good high temp stuff or are you trying to wrap headers with the crap 400 degree stuff?

Air is a good insulator in that it doesn't transmit heat. What Adoom does works well as there is the airgap between the radiant surface and the heat shield, same as there is on parts of the exhaust under the car. If you can mount shields around the place, it'll do the job. Doesn't really matter what the shields are made of - doesn't have to be 3mm thick as that will heat up, retain heat and not cool down as quick as something thinner like galvanised sheet.

thin stainless (more shiny the better) would be my choice if making a shield. wont absorb as much heat as ali. wont be as light tho

Hyeah - heat shield.
A metal heat shield is best, thin is best as thick conducts heat to the extremities of the heat shield.
The heat shield temp floats at about 1/2 way between the hot object and the ambient temp beyond.
The air gap either side of the shield needs to be big enough to allow some airflow 5 to 10mm min

polishing the metal also helps as polished metal is has a very low emisstivity level which means very little heat will be radiated from it.

I did this to my bonnet - Adhesive gold foil from USA, works really well I was quite surprised, will prob add a piece of stainless steel sheet over it then another layer of the gold foil. As my manifolds are pretty close to the bonnet.
3 layers will be better than 1! :D

Hmmm, so space shuttles are covered in ceramic tiles for heat proofing.

Perhaps I could take a pottery class?

Two for one, make a heat shield and have a crack at some hippy chicks :lol:

Yeah that gold foil is pretty badass, I'm sure it's out of my pricerange though!

Might look into the ceramic coating / ACL sheets options a bit further.

The acl shield was quite $$ when I last priced it.
Better off using stailness steel.

The thing with the foil is installation is so easy and fast.

Think I could do it at $60 a sheet from memory, a SS sheet would be heaps deaer than that!

First off, I would buy some quality, hi-temp exhaust wrap (read:not the cheap shite on TM) and a pile of SS ties/clamps and spend a good amount of time ensuring all the piping is covered well.

Then a sheet of the ACL race series formable heat shield to shape into the ultimate shape to cover your entire manifold etc, it really is so workable that any shape is achievable with enough patience.

P.S Ceramic coating does work properly if its applied correctly, but not everyone in NZ who offers the seervice spends the time to do it properly.

Also on heat shielding stuff....who other than Alert Motorsport does that high temp sleeving for hoses? Have a few cables and hoses I wouldnt mind covering on my cars
