Good Engine builder/Machinist, North Shore

Hi, anyone can recommend me a good engine builder/machinist on the Shore who charges reasonable.

I need to take my $&#$% block for them to see if they can "fix" it...

when i went to Engine Specialties in Glenfield, i asked for an estimate for all of the work i gave them. they kept stalling, saying they needed to do some of the work before they could get a ballpark of the total cost, which i thought smelled fishy, but told them to go ahead with it anyway. had a quote from another place for $900, but was recommended these blokes, so went with them assuming it would be similar.

anyway, delay after delay turned into $1900 and four months of delay on my end, and this is just block prep, no building involved. this included boring out the block 0.5mm after discovering the bores were oval, but was still a massive shock.

ive paid the bill, but would warn against them purely for the fact that they were so dodgy with giving an estimate. not appreciated.

Thanks, I would definitely want a quote before any work done.

I would just shop around with block in the boot, but how do I know if they are good, since there are so many cowboys around, and had bad experience in past with engine rebuild (shoddy machine work)...

Gary at the Cylinder Head Shop in Glenfield did an awesome job on my 5efte engine and was extremely helpful, have since referred 2 others to him and both were extremely happy with him.

WTF?? What else did they do? $1900 is extortionate, unless there was a shedload of work involved. I think a good guideline is something like $60+ per bore to rebore them

Last lot of machining I had done was
block decked, head skimmed, bores honed and crank polished and everything tanked/cleaned for $200 cash. Guy was recommended by a mate that uses him for all the machining on his 7sec dragcar.

the work i asked them to do was: skim, hone, check for cracks and straitness, shot peen rods, and balance the rotating assembly. i supplied oversize pistons once i found the cylinders needed boring, and also supplied a clutch.

oh yea, and i was to assemble, so that isnt even in the cost!

my friends own and run gleye and parlane engine reconditioners , do an absolutely excellent job and do it for a great price , no complaints at all , pm me for details if you like and they are down in barrys point rd so very close

Yep Gary @ the cyclinder head shop is very good.

I got my head rebuilt by Gary and he assembled and balanced my bottom end all for 1k. I got the bottom end prepped somewhere else for $500 and that was polish the crank, check sizing and recommend bearing sizes, insert arp rod bolts and resize bigends with new bolts, resurface and hone block. So together that cost $1500 for rebuild excluding the price of pistons, rings,bearings and any other upgrades i added.

Funny thing was that Gary said my head was the first 20v he had ever rebuilt.

Was that from not cleaning the head after sandblasting? Perhaps it was miscommunication who would do the cleaning?
I remember picking up a CA18E head from Dodsons, it was reconditioned and full of sand...
