Altezza J160 6 speed noisy..

Postby 7ishNZ » Sat Jan 14, 2012 1:16 pm

Has anyone had a problem with the 6 speed box chattering on over-run? The box is quiet under load, but rattles a lot on trailing throttle.

Yep, really common.

"I've heard" that Toyota initally tried all sorts to remedy the issue.

Replace bearings, replace gear sets, replace gearboxes (while cars were still under warranty, had this issue)

But the issue remained.

Some people have had better luck with aftermarket single piece flywheels though, but it seems its just an annoying noise rather than anything that'll damage your gearbox.

Thread about it here

I have a solid aftermarket flywheel... the noise sounds more like it is coming from the rear of the gearbox...

Looks like I may have to get used to it..

What grade oil do you have in the box?

From memory one of the redline oils is the only thing that's easily available in the right grade.

Check play in universal joints of the drive shaft.
Check engine and gearbox mounts.
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Yep common noise. Gets worse when using 1 piece flywheel as stock dual mass unit dampens lots.

Just don't get a cheap short shifter (most are solid steel) as it acts like a tuning fork and amplified the noise even more
