New diesel car

Hey all, my old man wants a new car.

He wants something newish (5 years or newer) probably under 20k and he recently drove a focus diesel which he totally loved.

Can anyone recommend any of the new diesel hatches either euro or jap that are decent and anything that needs to be steered clear of?

he would also consider a petrol if it wasn't too heavy on gas.

New diesels are great - Our diesel is however not good and can cause big problems with new diesel engines.

I had my Audi Allroad diesel pump die before 100,000km and it was EXPENSIVE to fix.

Not a car, but my brother has a turbo diesel Hiace, think its 2.4L. 5 years old and last year the diesel pump died, needed a new one at crazy price.

Then the injectors failed due to corrosion.

All because NZ diesel is crap!

Peugeot 308 HDI XSP. 2.0l diesel turbo, wicked cars. Fairly large hatchback, plenty of boot space, comfortable.

Can buy new for 40k or 2-3 years old for mid 20k.

I've driven two work diesel cars, both either new or less than a year old.

Mondeo and a Hyundai i30, both in auto guise.

Both were super economical on the juice, drove nicely, weren't too loud inside etc. The Hyundai was *horribly* gutless though. Basically forget overtaking something at 100kph unless you've got about 3km of empty road to play with.

Dad is looking at this, was sold new by the dealer as the rural mail delivery car for northern cantabery, do you think he should be put off by the highish kms?

Corolla Diesel isn't a bad drive, you wouldn't think it was a 1.4 that's for sure

Mondeo and Corolla Diesels are both very nice cars.

But you really really don't want to be tall in the back of a mondeo. The newest ones are even worse than the last model, but the last ones were still a bit tight.
Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983

2.0 go really well!

One bit I'd be carefull of with Rural Posties is that they can be hard on brakes seeing as they do a huge amount of stop go driving. So just factor in the brakes may be due for pads and rotors if they haven't been replaced recently

Seems like he really likes the focus and mondeo, now to find a nice one in CHCH

First hand experience using Pro-ma DT5 diesel treatment does wonders for our crap diesel. So would be worthwhile using that as a safeguard against having short time period for repairing the pumps.

We had an 08 Focus as a reps car - damn quick! Quite a good drive too

I've driven heaps of those euro Ford diesels (working for a Mazda/Ford dealer).

Have to say they are a nice drive, but was completely blown away by the latest Mondeo Titanium diesel with the powershift transmission (dual clutch auto-shift manual). They are quick too.

We haven't seen many problems with the pumps yet (since they came out), except ones that have had bad fuel in them and they are generally rural vehicles.
