I recken you are right on the money to get them to come take a look at it then quote you an accurate price for it. And the comment about prep is 100% true. Just seen a mate of mine (a painter) who is doing up his '48 chevy pick up, he did a test panel it this new copper metallic paint from ppg. Looks incredible but requires 17 coats of paint, and the colour alone (i.e. minus clear and primer) is 6k for the whole truck.

I can't justify spending that on a road car, it's being built as an all rounder again - not a trailer queen. I do believe the conclusion might be to spray the car myself again with a little extra care (the dark blue didn't come out too bad for a garage job) and spend the extra cash on other more important things like 272 degree cams and head work.

Back on topic though... after my car being completely keyed on every panel... Once the insurance company pays for it to get completly repainted and it get's painted I'm going to be far to scared to park it anywhere!

There was a bank tv ad on a while ago with tips and tricks. One of them was to park between 2 expensive cars in car parks. I try and do this now. Makes sense.

I'm discovering that White is not the easiest colour to spray, it doesn't get the nice glossy when wet, matt when dry transition as much as other colours so its hard to see the wet line to lay down a good even coat. Oh, and every speck of crap show up really well in white. Looks mint without being blingy when done right tho.

Apparently White and silver are two of the hardest colours to match properly too.
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.

A guy i know paid about $13,000 for the paintjob on his big old American car. Then again, i think they did the prep work etc on it too (he's in a wheelchair).

Yeah bigger car with lots of straight panels, and likely a top quality finish too...have seen some cars in hot rod shops come out with $15k paint jobs without breaking a sweat

^ Correcto, white is not the easiest to spray, it is the colour which can hide discrepencies in the panel beating best. Just seen a full restore on a VN Calais where they have stayed with the original white but with a pearl through it, looks really good. If you are spraying at home do you wet the floor down beforehand? Help keeps the crap on the floor and not on the panel (i.e. poor mans booth)

At the moment i'm just doing engine bay and boot, and have done the boot and engine cover.. and i'm painting outside, not spraying that toxic 2K shit inside the house. (garage is downstairs part of the building). Will look at seeing if I can grab the keys off the landlord for the factory nextdoor for spraying the rest of the car.

Having a spare 15 Litres of basecoat means I can afford to redo bits a few times till i get them right :D

hey man faaaaaark 7k...check out my corolla wagon my mate paintd its the new ford green/blue he charged me $2500 he did full body work rub down in and out side did the engine bay (motor still in) and painted the whole thing in a bake oven out in east tamaki..i got qoute on the paint it self $900 for 4liters thats basecoat..
but in that $2500 he suppld everything i just gave him the cash and my wagon..
does a show job check it out..

we did it all ourselves on my car, had my flat mates bro on the actual spraying and helping do the harder body stuff. He's done the course and has the job. The paint job took over 2 months and looks good but could be a little better. Cost $1000 TRADE for the primer, top coat, clears, pearls, hardners, thinners, bog (we all need some) etc. If i ever wanted to get a paint job done again i would pay the 5k. Drive in, drive out. Perfect paint, if its a reputable company and mta member then it's all garunteed etc. Just my 2c.

Just got the bill from my painter, he did all of the masking and spraying, I did all the sanding. Was done in a booth and painted a blue pearl with a ton of clear. Came to $1400 and he was sorry it came to so much. If you are going to have a lifetime of restoring cars get real chummy with a good painter.

Right, so leading on from this whole discussion, I painted the back half of the MR2 in the weekend, in a very bright white. At the time I thought i'd done an okay job and managed to avoid much shit getting in the paint (painting outside).. however, today I finally got round to having a look at it, and the paint is full of shit, and so much needs respraying to hide it that i'm going to respray the whole car once i get the rust/panel work up front finished.

I want to do it myself, both to save the $$$, and cos I want to learn.. From the evidence doing it here at home isn't going to work, so my choices are.. the spare factory at work. Huge factory, nice big three phase compressor and close to home.. or somehow get access to a booth.

I'm just wondering how hard its going to be to keep the dust level down in a large open factory that has nothing in the way of ventilation facilities. Will a few good sweep/wash/blow outs then wetting the floor down be enough, or should I just bite the bullet and pay someone with a booth to shoot it for me?
If I pay somebody to do it i'll get a pearl thrown over too since i'm not yet confident enough in my own abilities to lay down good even coverage in a pearl.

If you want to do it yourself, you can make a temporary booth out of a big roll of plastic. Get a filter made up and an extract fan ducted to the other side, wet it all down first and that should minimise the bits and pieces getting on the paintwork.

Yeah, that idea would suck. I'd need to make a frame to support it all, and then cover 5 sides of a box big enough to hold a car and have me walk around all sides of it. Thats quite a lot of plastic and steel.
