2e engine misfiring problem

Postby zerodentz » Sat Feb 04, 2012 5:37 pm

We've just put new rings and bearings etc. in our corolla 2e engine which appears to have been successful but we still have a problem with the engine misfiring under load (which we assumed was the plugs being oiled up as they were prior to the overhaul). We have put bran new plugs which are NGK BCPR5EY, can anyone please tell me is this the correct heat range for this engine? The engine now starts perfectly hot or cold and idles perfectly but its only when its driven and has a load on that lacks power. Any advice with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Are they actually the right plugs? Not supposed to have BP5EYs in it?

What's the compression? What do the plugs look like?
It takes a lot for the wrong heat range to affect how it runs in the short term, just about anything will run everything for a while. Then if it's too cold it carbons up & misses all the time but especially under load/accelerating, if it's too hot it just overheats & cracks & misses all the time.
Wad'da you got?

the engine hasn't even done a 100km yet since we overhauled it, sounds great until we drive it, even then its good untill it hits a slight hill or needs to accelerate under load. i looked at new plugs shortly after putting them in and they were white on the end of every plug. I haven't done a compression check yet but looking at the plugs and the way the engine is performing its fine.

"Pretty" sure or Sure sure? They're not really something that can be about right. They're either spot on or wrong. I've had cambelts a tooth out that idled fine but stumbled under load and had no power.

yes, you'll be right, it must be a tooth out, i couldn't find the alignment dot on the camshaft bearing (it must be there i guess) so i made sure it aligned with the rocker cover stud which is central on the cap, i've checked it several times as well, thought i was right but can't be. it does what you say idles fine but lacks power under load, what a pratt i am i'll check it today, thanks.

Have a look at you Vacuum advance and make sure it is alright as if its not then setting your base ignition timing will be useless.

yes the vaccum advance seems to be ok but i'll check again, then will replace ht leads and distributer cap. clutching at straws now though.

Have you checked the mechanical advance is not jammed at some fixed number? Or is it one of those 2e's with the problematic carby?

i took it to my mechanic, he disconnected one of the vacuum hoses from the distributer, advanced the timing and adjusted the idle on the carb. its much better now, but i dont feel it's totally right, does anyone think i might have connected those hose's the wrong way round?
