4agze - turbo recommendations

Postby gmacrae » Sun Feb 05, 2012 8:45 am

Howzit guys. I owned a SC aw11 years ago and was one of the first around here to give it a turbo conversion. I used a little mitsi TD04 off a lancer GSR.

Anyway, long story short, i've ended up with a project - same car with the same turbo. Looking to up the performance of the thing to 200-220ish KW@wheels @ 18 or so PSI (obviously with supporting fuel mods). Dont want a lag monster.

What turbo would you run?

keep in mind the current (nicely made) steampipe manifold is set for the little TD04 turbine. Would be easy to mod to fit early TD05 and t25/28 flanges.

It would be nice to use internal wastegates initially, maybe with some porting.

Are these DSR turbo's on TM any good?

Cheers for any input

I imagine theyre like every other chinese made turbo on TM, a lottery.

How about one of the new Borg Warner EFR series, with built in BOV and WG? They put down great numbers, are very efficient, and have people raving about them in forum land.

A few years ago now, but the most common combination I believe was to take an FC RX7 turbo and put an R32 Skyline exhaust housing on it... Most of the OG 4AG-TE boys ran this setup for a while.

I've got a GT2871R you can buy and get Steve Murch to rebuild and wave his magic wand over, would probably be perfect for a 4AG.

Give the EFR another year. The supply is very limited as they have experienced high failure rates and I suspect they are attempting to redesign them.

You don't need anything like an EFR unless you're attempting to get every pony with little lag or need it for packaging reasons.

I'm a Garrett fan. Have been very reliable for me. I've only studied the T25 flange units, as such I'm not much use in your selection.

I might be able to get a cheap FC turbo actually, i remember hearing about guys using them - they're not really good for 200+ kw though are they?

Loonie - that GT2871R - that's probably a bit bigger than what I'm lookin for though right? I can see a bit of lag happnin there, no? So it needs a rebuild? it's ball bearing right? what kinda cash we talkin?

Cheers guys

Umm... well it came off an SR20 so possibly more lag on the 4AG, but thats where Steve's magic comes in. Needs a rebuild anyway. No idea if its ball bearing or even how to check? All I know its is a genuine GT2871R off an SR20 :) Cash? Probably cheap cheap, but more expensive than a paperweight :P

Been there done that, more effort than it's worth.

An S15 T28 or TD05 will reach your goal with minimal lag. GT2871r isn't a little turbo - this is an upgrade from the stock Silvia turbo. They're responsive on SR20DET's but don't expect much below 4000rpm on a 4AGE. A rebuild is also gonna cost you - a lot.

I'd be looking at a td05 16t from an early EVO for a cost effective option, or if you have the cash, looking at a garrett gt2860t would be quite nice. See I think atal build thread as he used one.

Gt2871r might be a little laggy on a 4age. I run one on a 3sge and get 16psi at 3600rpm. Would be ok if you put a smaller exhaust housing on it, but you might as well buy a smaller turbo if you going to spend the cash

Td05hr from evo 4 onwards would be my pick if you have the patience to make a decent twin scroll manifold.
current cars:
Evo 4 230Kw atw
1971 mini.
79 bugeye 245kw atw.
Evo powered mx5 under construction

i had a HT18/t3 rx7 skyline hybrid ran out of puff at 14 pound 170rwkw on a 4age.

Im upgrading to a Garrett GT2876r in the near future should ,ake it go significantly better with less boost and spool up the same if not earlier as are ball bearing. can get them through himni racing

How much are you willing to spend? That will have a fairly sizeable influence on your options....

use one of them. they tend to ramp on boost fairly slow. get about 10psi at 4000rpm. had it up to 18psi cant remember just were it gets that boost, would have to check, is 4500rpm+ though. this is on smallport. reving it to 8700 so actually has pretty wide powerband

Later one will be more responsive (with a twin scroll manifold)

shit that's cool. It must require a twinscroll/divided housing T3 turbo though, right? ahh way outta my budget anyway

yeh would have to make your own setup to work with twin scroll evo. so pretty much too hardbasket.

done similar thing on our safari. but using a 50mm wastegate to bypass into the 2nd scroll, rather than a butterfly plate. works ok on the filthy old diesel

thats a good idea! It would be easy enough to make this manifold feed one side of the TD05 twinscroll, then a 38mm wastegate from the collector dumping into the other side of the twinscroll. You could probably operate this wastegate on nothing but boost pressure too (no need for electronics), so it opens up the other side of the twinscroll at 8psi boost or somethin. Would still need another wastegate to manage boost. That's a lot of shit hangin off the manifold

Given me something to think about anyway, nice!
