JZZ30 value

Postby rollaholic » Tue Feb 07, 2012 10:20 am

got an older guy comes into work with a 1992 JZZ30 soarer. (1JZGTE) typical older guy its only done around 60k, and is fairly immaculate as i recall, and stock standard. he hardly drives it obviously. its an auto.

hes looking to move it on, and was asking what it might be worth. im not too clued up on the soarer front, but thought maybe 5 or 6k - more might mean waiting for a particularly keen buyer.

what do you lot think?

its in auckland if anyone is potentially interested, though i've no idea what he will actually want for it.

If it had the R154, it would be worth that money, but Im not sure if a 1J auto will fetch it unless its pristine.

Nice project car though if sailing is your thing ;)

One just sold on tardme $1 start/reserve auction for $1001. I paid $1500 for one a coupla years back. Mint and tidy, you might find someone willing to pay 4-5k I'd imagine, but like all things RWD these days they're stupidly overpriced for what they are.

Im no authority on car pricing, as I firmly believe in the age old addage that something is only worth as much as somebody is prepared to pay for it.

The point of difference in this case is that the car seems to be in above average condition, has low kms, was owned by the polar opposite of your typical younger Z30 owner, and was more than likely extremely well serviced/cared for, therefore will be worth more money than your typical 1j/auto.

But it will be dependent on whether or not somebody is looking for an above average example at the time its listed.

Start high, and work down from there :)

Early imports were notorious for being (electronically) wound back so pretty hard to pick condition purely based on dash kms.

I sold my JZZ30 for $6k in mid 2010. Limited spec, auto, 150km, HKS exhaust, new a/c LCD and a tonne of receipts from Mark for new TEMs struts, LCAs etc. The body & paint were 9/10 by the time I was finished with it.

Fantastic touring car, more practical than a Supra, pretty much same running gear, brakes, suspension etc but more affordable.

Monsieur Ree has hit the nail on the head. The old adage when selling a car is also "The first offer is usually the best offer".

In order to get top dollar, you need to have a car that appeals to the buyer that has money available and is looking right at the moment you are selling as well as being realistic on the value of said vehicle.

Not often, if ever, are all of these criteria met.

Are you looking to buy and on-sell for profit, or pickup a bargain for yourself?

Hell no! Mine is so fat, it has a complex, and on more than one occasion, I have caught it sticking one of its wheel down its throttle body.

the guy is an old mate of the boss, so the boss has first dibs on swindling the owner, hah.

i myself have coincidentally been looking at soarers lately, been feeling the need for another skid hack. i'd been checking out the 1UZ powered versions cos they seem to be cheaper. would certainly take this one if the price were right, but the right price for me would never make it past the boss.

plus the old owner would be horrified to learn what i had in store for it.

OT, kinda funny to think you can pick up a soarer, do a manual conversion and slap some cheap adjustable suspension in it to end up with a pretty fun thrasher for about half the price of a similarly equipped AE86 thats got about a third of the power.

I was bidding on that one!! Right up to $1001 (which was the other dudes auto bid!!).

If it's a genuine 60K soarer I'd estimate 5-7K. He would be best advertising on the soarer forums as a few of the older dudes with a bit of coin would snap something like that up fairly quickly

DON'T NOT CHOP A GOOD SOARER UP......please.

Not really unfortunately. Because the car will cost 3-4k, and the manual conversion will cost another 3-4k unless you do some serious scrounging and only run W box with the wrong shifter. Then another $1200+ for coilovers... so you're nearly at 10k.

So 10k for manual JZZ30 or 10k for AE86... I know which way I'd go, but thats because I'm old and like power and comfort ;)

i guess i under estimated the cost of a manual conversion, but i was figuring on a $1500 soarer :P

then again, how many 10k AE86s actually sell for 10k

whats the soarer forums address? i have no idea how genuine the kms are. if its been tampered it was in japan. this guy has owned it for 15 years or something. he is an ex mechanic, so you'd hope it had been looked after - but then i think about how i have treated some of my cars :P from memory its certainly extremely tidy.
