Installing one of these onto a pump:

Do you put the side with the spring facing the water or oil, or facing the outside world?

Closed/flat side = outside world. Spring = inside.

Generally you should be able to read the text on any seal like this once installed. Generally...

Don't forget a little appropriate lubricant in the bore. These lip seals work by having the higher liquid pressures squishing the rubber down onto the shaft. Zero lube will cause wear.
