R154 Gear box temperatures/rattle

Postby limbo » Wed Feb 08, 2012 4:49 pm

So I have been chasing a nasty violent rattle in my car and I think I have narrowed it down to the gear box, it only happens at low revs and anything more than slight throttle goes away over 1900rpm.

Car is a 7MGTE Supra with a R154. I took it for a drive got it up to temp and then removed the shifter covers and had a feel of the actual box, couldnt really feel the vibrations be I definitely could hear it a lot better.

My worry is that the box has been run low of fluid when I had the clutch changed and the company didnt fill it right which could explain the heat and the failed bearings/rattle?

Anyway gear box was too hot to touch for more than a second. How hot do they get there was some abuse earlier on but by the time I pulled off the covers it was just driving in traffic.

The rattle seems to be relatively common/normal in the R154 and W58 at lower revs, both of mine have done that and as you say, once you pick up the throttle and revs increase, it shuts up. Is there any chance your noise is being caused by gear chatter?

How hot do they get? I cant give you a definitive answer for that as I dont have a temp sensor in mine. but Im planning on doing it before next track day.

Rest assured that the heat coming off mine after 10 laps of Taupo track 1 was immense. They are built to cope with it, provided you have good oil in there. I run RL MT90 for the record.

The gearbox in my race car is hot enough to burn your hand after 10 laps.
