Rust killing products.. what works?

Just pulled the windscreen out to fix rusty A-pillars and roofline and need to know who has experience with rust killing products, and could tell me what works (or doesn't!)

Have stripped back all the flaky rust with one of those 3m paint and rust stripper disc things, which are truely awesome, entire bonnet of the car is coated in rust dust.

Now i'm left with a layer of black very hard stuff (rust?) where the flaky rust was. The paint stripper disc didn't even touch this stuff, and it laughs at 80 grit carbide paper, so I figure I have to go chemical on its ass to get a result.

So is there anything that will work, other than an angle grinder
and a welder?

POR15 is pretty good. Short of chopping it out i'd give that a shot. www.por15.co.nz

Another thing you could try is sand blast that section which may remove more of the rust that is left. Can get cheap guns at supercheap (link) get some garnet, a decent dust mask and attack it. I guess it depends how much effort the job is worth to ya.

EDIT: just noticed they have updated their site sweet video lol. Check out the Super Starter Kit, that's what I started with. Then you can just add to it as you need more paint / marine clean / metal ready.

Okay, looks like i'll have to track down some POR15 today then. Anybody know of anybody in auckland that stocks it thats likely to be open today?

Looked at the Wattyl stuff, but one of the product data sheets said that it was not suitable to be overcoated with 2-pack paints, so thats a no-go.

Did some quick research and it would seem that the black stuff is black rust, which is actually pretty stable and doesn't tend to spread. But since its behind the windscreen and going to be a complete bitch to match the paint thats going on I'll go nuclear on its ass just to be sure I don't ever have to take the screen out again.

But you MUST follow the directions and use metal ready.
Don't get it on your skin, it will take days to wear off.

Nobody open today has POR15, so i'm attacking the rust with some 3M rust dissolver and scotchbrite pads, and have a can of that killrust gloss white topcoat. The rust dissolvers seems to slowly be making a difference, i'll see how that goes and maybe grab some por15 tomorrow. Just on a drinks break atm.

well, the rust dissolver is too f'n slow, and i've just poked three holes thru the a-pillar. guess its cut'n'weld time.

there's a spraycan product repco have, dupli-colour rust fix, i've always found it to be pretty effective on rust. I'm gonna go get some of that POR15 stuff though, would the local POR15 supplier have this metal ready stuff also?

Read the safety sheets they should supply with the POR15, the fumes are pretty bad, so don't do it in a closed garage etc.

Yeah it's a resin based product so think of it like fibreglass resin fumes.
