Side Exit exhaust

Postby no_8wire » Wed Feb 15, 2012 11:05 am

Does anybody know how far the exhaust needs to exist behind the rear doors to pass a wof?

Looked on the virm and got this as a reason for rejection:

The exhaust system is so constructed that emitted heat
or fumes are likely to harm vehicle occupants, eg the
exhaust gases are not directed away from the perimeter
of the vehicle’s passenger compartment
(Note 6).

Note 6 Externally venting wastegates (screamer pipes) are not permitted as they are not adequately muffled and the exhaust
gases passing through the wastegate are not directed through the vehicle’s exhaust system. However, wastegates that have
their own exhaust system or exhaust pipe exiting behind the passenger compartment are permitted

Question is...how far behind?

I have heard something like that too.

Wouldnt that be for a sedan type car? Isnt a hatch/wagon considered as having a rear door?

And the very first reason for failure in the VIRM exhaust section is...

1. A vehicle is not fitted with an exhaust system that includes a means of sound reduction

Maybe it's like spare wheel security - only has to comply if present.

Run open headers/turbo next wof test.

Yeah car in question is a sedan, so passenger compartment would end behind the rear most part of the passenger door?

What about in a hatch back situation - won't the boot be counted as a rear opening?

It isn't a passenger opening so no the hatch won't count.

Even though there's no divider between the back seat and boot?

Nothing separating the hatch from the passengers so it is still the same compartment.

I went through this with my Starlet before we built the exhaust tunnel in the floor coming out the sill in front of the rear wheel. The hatch doesn't count and on a two door with non opening windows the side windows don't count either.
