exhaust manifold resurfacing

Postby steroidcontaskie » Tue Feb 14, 2012 9:09 pm

Hi all

I just put at straight edge on my exhaust manifold and it doesn't look too good. How flat does it need to be? and if I need to resurface it, can I do it myself or is there somewhere good to take in in central Auckland?

Cheers
Ed

Quite flat, otherwise it'll leak like a mofo. The tubular kinds like 20v ones you can crank down tighter to pull flat (not ideal!) but cast ones definitely need to be machined.
Any decent engine reconditioning shop will be able to do this for you.

Cool, it is an aftermarket one for a 2jzge turbo conversion. It hasnt been used yet, just dont think it is made that well.

I know exactly what you mean.

I had both the head flange and the T4 flange machined true.

They were so badly warped that there is no way they were going to seal properly

when ever i have made an exhaust manifold, i have always gotten the manifold face resurfaced when i have finished. its pretty much something that has to be done

Exactly Shane, its just a shame the guys who made our manifolds didnt seem to see the importance of said work ;)

that is why I always start off with 12 or 15mm plate, that way you still have at least 10mm left when its true :)

I am just a little concerned that once the faces are resurfaced the turbo assembly wont fit anymore. In hindsight I should have got the surfaces dont before getting the downpipe modified to fit. Oh well... life is a learning curve. Will find out this week, taking it to edgell automotive tomorrow to get it done.

Cheers for the replies

Btw. Did your NA-t start up ok once the turbo was installed? and could you drive it around off boost? or did you have to get the ECU installed and tuned first?

The amount they remove shouldnt change things that drastically mate, but out of interest what sort of gasket did you have installed when you mocked up your DP on the turbo?

If I recall correctly, you arent changing your pump/injectors, so your car will drive fine off boost as it just keeps using the factory fuel maps.

The GE map sensor will go 'urgh' once you hit 1 or 2 psi anyway so the chance of damage is pretty slim provided you just stay in vacuum.

Forgive me if I have asked previously, but what ecu have you decided on running? And is it something that someone local(ish) can tune for you?

I mocked it up with a really thin metal one that came with the kit, although the kit also came with thicker gaskets too. For the manifold I put a toyota 3 layer metal gasket on, the thick one that came with the kit was damaged in shipping so I couldn't use it.

I have already changed the fuel pump to a Walbro 500HP one, and I have 550cc injectors to install, but I will try start the car and check for leaks etc before I install the 550s, and I am guessing the car wont start once the 550s are in.

(Also the Trans has been changed to a stronger A340E out of a turbo soarer, gotta check that it works)

I am going with a MAPECU 3 for the tunning and Auckland performance tuning can install and dyno tune it for me (15 mins away). I am going to get a flat bed to tow the car to them.

My mate thinks I will get 80RWHP once it is tunned. Personally I just want to be able to beat limbo's Turbo A off the line :-).

Cheers
Edward

Try and use the steel gaskets wherever possible as the thick ones that come with the kit are nasty.

Good idea on putting in the walbro and 550s, but definitely hold off on putting in the bigger injectors until its at the tuners, as given theyre a bit larger than stock, it more than likely wont start, or if you are lucky it might start but will run pig rich.

I would be saving some money and driving it to the tuners, unless of course the flatbed is a friends. It will drive like its 100% stock provided you stay in vacuum.

80rwhp is quite ambitious, I would be happy with half that :)

Yea 40rwhp would be ok, but since I have installed a torsen diff, I think I will be able to control the full 80rwhp of fury.

You are right, it would be better to drive the car there and then change the injectors, but I am pretty noob at cars and I am sure I would screw something up if I tried to do it there.

I will just call the AA and say it needs to be towed to the Auto electrical place next to the Tuners... pro skills

Cheers

I have a mate who has a refacer for cylinder heads and he refaced my exhaust manifold.

He's based in albany if you're keen.

Cheers for the advice guys, I have already taken the manifold to Edgell to get it done. Hopefully I will be able to do the final fitting on the weekend.

Wish me luck.

Edward
