Imports in Aus

Postby Toby » Thu Feb 16, 2012 4:58 pm

So, I am moving to Aus at some stage.

I am perturbed as I am grossly ignorant of the import vehicle market there.

My girl is wanting a "holden" cruz or some shit when we get over there but I was hoping for a bit of an insiders interpretation of the ease of picking up a SW20 for myself later on.

Looking online made me feel a bit ill as they seem to cost a lot more there but I only seemed to find cars at dealers.

Anyone in the know give me an estimate on general hairdresser car availability?

NSW don't even think about it.

an SW20 will cost you 3x as much as in NZ.

Car market here is $&#$% yo... well after being in NZ it makes you not want to bother.

Buy one at least twelve months out and take it with you.

what state are you heading to?

it really depends on the car you are after - there's quite a few skylines and some other random imports in the country but otherwise it's mostly the domestic models. There are many cars in Aus you wouldn't even see in NZ such as the Proton Gen2 but that's probably a good thing as they are really cheap and nasty.

There isn't so much of an over-supply of cars in Australia as there are in NZ so used car prices remain steady and firm - for instance a mid-late 90s Corolla would cost you $5k+ and you still see some late 80s shape Camrys being advertised for $3k every now and then.

If you look hard enough or pick up someone elses unfinished project you could pick up a bargain.

Yeah definitely wait for something good. I managed to pick up a lovely 1997 EP91 with 130,000km's full service hist, all books, PS and AC for $3k, pretty good considering it had a years rego as well which is worth about a grand.

You clock up alot of k's here as well. In my first two months I did 12,000km! That's more than I've put on any of my cars by far!

Thanks guys, too late to buy here and send over. I wont be in a rush over there either.

I will probably just end up driving whatever my partner buys... will obviously post here when I crash it into a kangaroo.
