Importing a car from japan, how to?

Postby LEAKER » Thu Feb 16, 2012 1:10 pm

I'm contemplating purchasing a car strait out of Japan. Has anyone done this? Tips and storys good or bad would be great thanks. Also are there any company's that deal witht this sort of thing without putting a major mark up on like a car dealer.

C Moore Motors in Petone import heaps, and I dont think he puts a huge margin on for personal imports. Otherwise Miles across the road from my old work can sort you out too.

My brother inlaw is good mates with him and has brought in a couple of GTR's in the past.

Would it actually get in as an SIV? For a start you have to convince them you will own it as a collectors item and given the number already in NZ I have doubts it will get through. Depending on year it will exceed the production volumes too.

I think you would get a very prompt reply saying no. Quite rightly too, there are hundreds of MR2's in NZ and I'd hardly call them collectible.

I don't think you will get far by saying it is a Gen IV or Gen V and therefore more collectible cause it has clear indicators.

Can be done, a member (benckj) on the MR2 NZ forums imported one.
There was thread on those forums somewhere if you can be bothered searching for it.

Yes. Did you look at the application form I linked to? It pretty clearly and succinctly states the criteria to be met, and it appears to me that a turbo would tick the boxes. Google an article, and Bob's your uncle.

However, they still will cost a ton of money, and probably be fuxxored. As the MR2 club guy who is mentioned here can attest to. Definitely a labour of love, and setting fire to a huge pile of money, to in the end land up with a car that you probably could have bought far more cheaply and easily by just waiting for somebody in the MR2 club here to sell theirs.

Of course I read it, or did the specific points I noted that I didn't think it would meet not clue you in.
Any half clued up NZTA person looking at an application for an MR2 should reject it, common as here so not really the sort of car the scheme is targeted at and very unlikely to be held as a collectors item. The form also seems to require you to own the car first as well, big gamble to take.
