I have some 2.5mm sheet ali that I could make something from.

Are you not worried that the parts of the shroud where the fan's aren't is effectively blocking the flow through the radiator?

I cant remember the gap but it was about 15-20mm.

If you get worried about little flow, you can have 'flaps' on the back that when cruising get pushed open, and when the fans are on are pulled closed - just from pressures/flows of the air.

I tried looking for a setup which i based mine off but their site is down now.

This is a better pic of how it all looks (not mine this time)

With the help of kinloud, we got measurements close to spot on to get the best sealing as possible.

I could have gone to a viscous fan setup on the JZA70 (With 2JZ) and used a MA70 shroud... thats just ghey though :P

Thanks for all your responses!

I'm wanting to put electric fans on my Supra - 1G-GTE single turbo making 240rwkw.

I've only got 2.5mm ali - but this is probably going to be too hard to work with to bend it.

Does anyone know any sheet metal places on the north shore that'll be open tomorrow? (saturday)

Here's a picture of my radiator:

I think there would be. But I don't have either of those and I've already bought 2 electric fans :)

Also the viscous fan is so boring looking haha

Going to scrap metal place today and see if they have any scrap ali

I maybe wrong, but I'm not so sure on the flat wall shrouds. Factory ones tend to have a taper, or a fan that more closely matches the size of the rad.
Remember the fans only work whilst parked or going very slow. Air flow at speed is the main cooling effect and from those pics there doesn't seem to be much flow friendliness going on

That's what I'm thinking too.

It almost seems like you'd have a better overall performing radiator if you put a small 10-20mm 'tunnel' between the fans and the radiators but left the rest of the radiator un-shrouded?

Which would mean that at slow speeds or idle only that section covered by the fan will be cooled.
I guess it all really depends on how marginal your cooling system is.
On something like an AW11 with massive cooling capacity, no problem. On a low volume turbo 6cyl.... Not so sure.

You can try one option, and keep an eye on the temps to see how much the fan is actually needed. And what effect they have when they kick in.

Personally I would shape it so the air would flow a lot better, not hard to do, just takes a little planning.

Id also mount that radiator with some rubber type mountings too

If I could offer some advice?

Before you spend anymore money on this, I would seriously think about onselling the electrics to help fund the purchase of the oem shroud and clutch fan from a wreckers. Sure they might not look as good, but without a shadow of a doubt, they will perform as required

As a test this is what I've done.

If it works - I guess I'll leave it.

The head of the zip tie goes into a slot in the fans then I cut another head off another zip tie and pulled it tight against it. Rubber between the fan and radiator and against the piece of ali and radiator.

Don't make me post a face palm picture.....

So what happens when the cable ties fatigue, snap and let the fan float around? Sure it works, if that's all you want then sweet as. But it's not hard to do it right.

Each to their own I guess.

Well it is hard to do - unless you've got some decent tools.

With basic tools the only option I can see that's viable is to make a full sized flat shroud and cut two holes for the fans.
But then that brings up the ol' 'blocking off parts of the radiator where the fans aren't' situation....

Are hacksaw, drill, file, and maybe pair of pliers, basic tools?
If yes, then you can do a proper mounting bracket.

All you need to have in materials is a 12 - 25mm wide alloy flatbar, which you can buy at Mitre10, Bunnings, Placemakers etc.
It looks like this:
Image
Cut the flat bar into appropriate size pieces and drill holes on each end.
Factory mount points have m6 thread. use factory mount points to mount the alloy pieces and fan is bolted onto alloy pieces.
