Shift lights and Guages

Postby captain crescent » Tue Feb 21, 2012 6:54 pm

Ok so i have been trying to get a Gizzmo shift light but after a few emails to Gizzmo NZ sales i got told they had no stock of any of the lights I wanted nor did they have an ETA or had no enthusiasm making a sale .

This now leads to me turning to the Toyspeed nation with a question.
What shift lights are smallish, quality and not huge money? I don't need launch control or anything to flash just an adjustable shift light maybe with preshift.

I am also after some good quality gauges (water temp, oil pressure and oil temp). so what works?, Has good quality and once again not ridiculous amounts of cash.

This is all for my race car so has to be practical.

Recommend away.

i got one for their tach recall shift lights and a launch controll modules lying around if you want to buy.

was going to install it in my old ae92 but the tach recall didnt work with the dash but now i figured out why and its just the limiting resister dropping the voltage right down before it goes onto the rest of the electronics.

depending on what you are putting it on you may need to bypass this to get the tach recall working correctly.

I was going to have a go at you for being a wanna be ricer. Then I saw you have a RunX.
They should come factory with a 6k rpm warning light

Let me guess - comes on before the floor falls out? Or the subharmonic resonance explodes the oil pump?

 No, in first if your not paying attention it will hit the limiter at 8k in about .5 of second if you go over 6k. Scared the crap out of me first time I drove one.
Was a brand new Corolla GT with less than 5000k on the clock and I thought I'd $&#$% it

What's your budget/definition of ridiculous? Motec SDL and SLM will do all of the above - for a price.

Aah I see. Best gauges I've ever had were Apexi 60mm White faced EL2. I think they'd sneak into your budget. Simple white face with EL lighting at night made them easy to see and the warning light meant that it attracted your attention quickly. The memory recall feature in the control unit was awesome for diagnosing problems. Sometimes it's a bit hard to keep an eye on gauges as well as pull over safely when something is going wrong so it's handy to have the playback so you know what went wrong.

Never had a shiftlight so can't help there. The few cars I've driven with them seemed totally pointless - by the time I registered that it was on and reacted, I was on the limiter anyway - pretty much had to drive by feel/ear as normal which sorta defeated the purpose. Might have been different if I had more time in the cars/knew them better (although I'm inclined to think that this would bring me back to not needing one) Each to their own though :)

Jaycar had a kit for three stage shift light back in the day... cost effective and great for a stealth led shift light install...
