Haven't tried one, but dealextreme sells all sorts of adaptors for that, eg http://www.dealextreme.com/p/elm327-wir ... ool-112586 not sure what is compatible with what though, just an example.

Have been looking into this too, cheaper way of getting fault codes and live data from the ecu but depending on the adaptor you buy it may not work on all models of car, also may or may not be able to access all the relevant info from the ecu either from what i've read. And looking at some things sometimes can't pull some codes out of the ecu or clear the fault codes.

They usually only pull the generic OBD fault codes,
which are the codes that start with P0xxx,
not the manufacturer specific ones from P1xxx on.

Good for basic checks
but no where near the capability of a full scan tool.

Hey I bought one off deal extreme ages ago to try on my runx. I can connect from my phone using torque (i bought it lol -_-) to the device, but for the life of me, the obd2 scanner device can't seem to connect to the car.

If anyone is interested, I'd like to try it on another car to see if it works. I'm in the Akl Area. Maybe perhaps @ Toyspeed meet?

Generic OBD-II interface cables one can buy on eBay or Dealextreme (e.g ELM) are not of much help for TOYOTA OBD-II scanning without proper software.

Software which you'll get with those may work for some American cars (even if claimed to work with Toyota) but not with Japanese exports.

I can do the OBD-II scan (Powertrain, ABS, SRS, EMPS) for your TOYOTA including TOYOTA specific codes and corresponding stop kadr or clear codes - not a problem.

For example I can see how many km your car traveled since Trouble codes were cleared last time if ever (maximum 65535 km) - so if odometer shows 35000 and codes were cleared 58000 km ago - that may raise an eyebrow, right?

Does $30 sounds like a fare charge for scan?

...No charge if my laptop can't communicate with your car for whatever reason (OBD-II socket is not working).
