Eagle F1 Directional 5's

Hey all,

Not for a Toyota, but wondering if anyone is using the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Directional 5 tyres? Apparently they replace the GSD3's. Anyway wanting to know how they are wearing. From memory the GSD3's were a bit softer so werent the best for wear? Any comments welcomed, cheers

Have just put these on the rear of the Suby, but being that that was only a month ago, cant comment on wear though. Alot quiter than the tyres on have on the front, seem to have plenty of grip as well, although I dont really drive super hard on the road these days.

I'm a bit underwhelmed, thought more ppl would be using them considering the popularity of the GSD3

The awesome German made GSD3s were phased out years ago and people didn't trust the Chinese made versions.

People just switched tyres to the likes of Toyos and Bridgestones.

I went to get more GSD3 tyres and was told they don't make the equivalent in my size. So now rock RE002 tyres and have found them great so far.

Car - 1998 AE111 4afe Corolla wagon.
I drive this car very hard - cornering, braking and accelerating (as much as a 4afe can)
Wheels - alloy 6.5x15

Current tyres:
Goodyear Eagle F1 Directional 5 (replaced the GS D3)
195/50/15
Grip - very good, dry or wet. Very impressed.
Response to steering input - good, but nowhere as good as the RE001.
Tends to move and squirm which took me a while to get used to.
Still experimenting with tyre pressures to see if I can improve this

Bridgestone Potenza RE001 Adrenalin
195/50/15
Grip - good
Response to steering input - very good, very direct, minimum squirm even when new with full tread depth.
Got 52,000kms before I replaced them with about 2 - 2.5mm ltread remaining.

how did you find them in the wet Ken?

I'm curious about this too. My RE001's are down to 4mm but have bad toe wear on inner edge ( ) and TBH the car feels like crap in the rain

Rain [edit] performance is a big factor for me

the gs3d's made my sw20 100% better in the wet

Yokohama Advan neovas, real grippy mofos those ones, when I first got the car and really tried testing the limits, I ran out of balls before these ran out of grip, but wear quite fast from the 6 months I have owned the car, and are quite noisy on our roads and also pricey which is why I swapped over to the Goodyears, and will probably grab another couple soon to throw on the front.

went/going through 3 sets of RE001: in rain very good until you get to 2-3mm. Better than GSD3.

Potenza grip not as good as the goodyears
BUT
I miss the potenzas mainly because there was no squirm

Goodyear grip is fantastic but the car moves around a lot more so don't have as much confidence to throw the car around as much.

Thanks for the replies. Also got a price on the RE002's, they are about equivalent to the top of the range Goodyear Asymmetrics, or about $60/tyre more than the 5's. Guy at Bridgestone told me the RE002's are a softer tyre though so not great for wear but grip was unbelievable.

I think for the price the Directional 5's will do the trick, will be better than what I have now. Cheers all

Be interesting to see how much softer the 002's are in comparison to the 001's. I've found the 001's to last a fairly decent time considering use

I had the old GSD3's from germany on my old trueno, man they stuck VERY well. But they also wore very quick when pushed alot

I'm running German made Eagle F1 asymmetric 245/18 and 265/18's on the supra, have done about 20,000k's and the rears "could" last another 10,000, fronts are only 50% worn.

Previous tyres were utter crap on the stock wheels so I can't make a proper comparison, but I think they are awesome!

Luckily I found a pair of 265 German asymmetrics on trademe for $450 a couple months ago so I won't have to buy chinese ones when the inevitable happens.

I dont understand what the difference is whether the new Goodyears are made in China or Germany. Its still the same product. Is this based on actual knowledge that they are different quality, or just hear say from old mate down the road?

Not everything thats made in China is shit, your Ipad is made there...

Actually big difference. I had German GSD3, and they performed better than the Chinese GSD3 (Australian GSD3 also were better than Chinese). Quality control, and Chinese are known to skimp on that, taint compounds with cheaper ingredients, skimp on process, etc.
