surf tailgate problem

Postby rollaholic » Tue Mar 06, 2012 4:33 pm

hey all,

just had a quick look at a mates 94 surf - the one where you need to retract the glass to drop the tailgate.

trouble being the glass is not winding down.

i only had a few minutes, but all the fuses look to be ok, and there appears to be no power at the switch in the front.

anyone able to shed some light on common issues with these?

(and yes, i made sure the window switch was turned on at the drivers door :P)

the key in the rear lock doesnt move it either.

The motor is dead, very common.

Less 10% of the 100's I have done have been the window motor so I'd disagree.

1. Make sure the wiper arm is fully up at rest.

2. is there a beep or a click from the rear?

There is a controller in the back that has 3 or 4 relays on the board and the relays crap out all the time, or they get dry solder joints.

My bet would be step 1.
Give the wiper arm a push up.

should have mentioned i did check the wiper arm, however its a bit rooted (loose / goes up past where it should) so perhaps whatever its switching is not being switched?

no sounds as i recall.

Crawl in the back, remove the trim etc, apply power straight to the motor (if the motor wants to go up, reverse polarity) if that doesnt work then your motor is fried, if it works sweet, you need to look into the things the other guys have posted, and the micro switch that allows the motor to only work when the tailgate is shut etc.
Hi Im Ben, Have a nice day :)
