3S-GE Altezza RS200 Issue (Sorted)

Postby loudstealthGT-Four » Fri Mar 09, 2012 6:36 pm

My sister is having an issue with her Altezza.

I took it for a drive and it revs fine until you hit about 4800rpm and then it just stops accelerating/has no power. Also when its idling it will keep dropping below normal idle (800rpm ish) and on the odd occasion it will just die.

Anyone know what would cause this?

Thanks in advance

What air filter does it run full stop. Could be blocked fuel, air filter or dodgy fuel pump

Fuel filter has been changed.

It losses all power as soon as you get to 4800-4900rpm every time without fail. So im thinking its got something to do with VVT-i (maybe), but I don't really know much about it though, so just guessing.

Just a standard air filter, don't know when it was last changed but will defiantly look into cleaning/replacing that

I would be replacing the airfilter, cleaning any oil off inside the throttle body and clean the MAF sensor

Next would be to see if there are any error codes stored up, and check plugs and coils etc

Might pay to check condition of the oil too. Who knows what condition the inside of the engine is like, sludged up making the vvt-i almost inoperational. Have seen this before and not the best of looks. Vvt-i solenoid not working or faulty too?? I'd check the basics first like air filter, spark plgs etc

my old one was doing the exact same thing. Turned out the AFM was covered in crap. Took it out, cleaned it with contact cleaner and a cotton bud stick thinggy. All good after that.

Yeah gunged up VVTi solenoid seems to be getting more and more common, makes sense as they get older/cheaper/less maintained.

There is a little oil filter gauze in the banjo fitting for the oil feed to the vvti, they are particularly common for blocking up. Who changed the fuel filter? They are an in tank item and if all the o-rings were not swapped over with the pump will give fuel starvation issues, also as they run a returnless system if an o-ring was left off the regulator or something would cause issues.

Clean AFM with white spirits/brake clean. This could cause that issue but more commonly flat spots, idle issues and poor take off/accel issues.

I cant remember 100% if they run the same throttle system as the 2jzge (cable that runs to the throttle, but has a fly by wire style motor opening the butterfly) but iv recently replaced one on a 2jzge for that exact issue.

Also bear in mind, that there's an 'ACIS' system in the air filter box.

To minimise noise at low rpms etc, it sucks the air through this tiny hole, then when you raise rpms/load/etc, it uses a VSV to pull open the main air intake channel. in the airbox.

If this stops working, the engine can be trying to suck air just through the tiny secondary inlet the whole time.

Probably the easiest thing to check first too.

So the problem turned out to be the cat on the exhaust. It was was damaged and blocking the exhaust.

Got it cut out and had it replaced with a piece of pipe, and is now running normally
