AW11 with SW20 brakes/hubs?

Postby gmacrae » Mon Mar 12, 2012 3:52 pm

Hi guys. Just a question for people that know the MR2's inside and out. Is there any way to swap SW20 brakes and hubs into an AW11? (im thinking SW20 turbo if there's a difference). I'm thinking bias-wise they would probably suit well, and I'd like to convert the car to 5x114 anyway.

Anyone know if it's do-able?

There isn't. Can't help with the rest though. Good luck :)

No difference between na and turbo sw20 brakes eh? thats hardcase

That one of malcolms has rear sw20 callipers and discs i think? front is celica tho iirc.

So from that I take it the SW20 rear callipers and discs fit the aw11 rear end... what about the SW20 5 stud hubs?

Diference between pre 93 and post 93 tho, post 93 have bigger discs. Don't think the caliper sizing changed.

What you need is in my mr2 build up thread.

SW20 late 92 onwards calipers (22v casting mark)
Front rotors from Facelift AW11
6mm spacers between hub and rotor
Longer studs

There is no known bolt-on solution for switching to 5x114.3, but it can be done with a little machining.

On the front you just take the SW20 front hubs and machine them to match the AW11 bearings, there is information about this on twobrutal.co.uk (if you can't find it then let me know).

For the rear, I haven't seen specific details about it but you should be able to machine SW20 NA rear hubs to fit inside the AW11 bearings. They share the same driveshaft splines so your shafts should go straight in. They require machining because the AW11 wheel bearings have a smaller internal diameter than the SW20 ones.

Having done the hub conversion, on the rear you should be able to bolt on any SW20 rear brakes, on the front you'll need something like a combo of ST185 front calipers and pre-93 SW20 disks (SW20 calipers will not bolt to AW11 steering knuckles).

I think Wayne/vvegas's car was 5x100, IIRC on one end he machined the flanges off the hubs and pressed/welded ones with a 5x100 pattern on, and maybe the other end he machined a 5x100 hub to fit into the bearings? It was ages ago so my memory could be wrong on that
