go with the st205 over 185. numerous improvements over the 185, except for maintenance on superslut

V4+ STi and get a baffled sump installed, If your budget can stretch get a version 6+ with the 6 speed gearbox or drop a 6 speed into an earlier one

i do like the 205s but i would also be picking STi in that match up, even before you consider the availability of aftermarket stuff.

ah yes, the parts bin. Subaru wins here. Finding stuff for the st205 would be challenging if going beyond stock.

dont buy the 185, they are SO fat and slow in stock form. also less reliable than either the sti or the 205 by a mile.

Any reason you are after 4WD? In all but gravel rallying you'll be slower. It'll also be harder and more expensive to maintain.

As ive said above im a rally fan so like the pedigree the cars have, plus i already have a rwd turbo car for all the fun sideways stuff :twisted:

Having driven GT4's, STI's and owned an Evo 1 I would go for the Evo 1. I used to abuse my Evo 1 something chronic, taking it to the drags, 7500rpm launches all day at the drags and never an issue. Decent suspension setup and they are fine round a track.

$8k for a Pink 20 year old 215km No Wof/Reg Celica that needs work...Here I was thinking Evo's were overpriced. It's a nice car don't get me wrong, but there is more bang for buck out there IMO.

When you get bored of it, get the stock ECU tuned and make more power than an early STI or any GT4 can dream of on the stock turbo - reliably.

But if you are doing track days, are you sure that rally pedigree is important enough? Not trolling, genuine question, because a lot of the turbo 4wd beasties are going to really want serious brake upgrades for any track use, and it's likely they will have open front diffs (which suck) and are probably going to be a bit heavy.

If I was starting with a clean sheet of paper and ditching my Corolla club hack, basically my entire shopping list for a trackday toy / road car for sub $10k would be
Integra Type R.
That's it. I love my Toyota's, but bang for buck, the ITR at the moment is pretty good. $6k gets you a cosmetically scruffy one, and that leaves you $4k to do other stuff with, like cage + seats + belts.

that is easy to solve if you go about it the right way, just a matter of spending a couple of hours browsing the DBA online calalogue and trade me shopping for the calipers.

Modernish (95+) Evo/STi's come pretty well kitted in stock form. You have to be going very quickly to need to upgrade from the stock LSD's/Brakes. Even the helical front LSD's are plenty capable. Far as weight goes, yes they're heavier but even the "heavy" Evo 5/6 is only about 100/200kg heavier than a DC2R depending on whether it's an RS/GSR. The STI's are lighter than the Evo's again and weight is pretty evenly distributed. In terms of Power/Weight - the rally wannabe's still come out on top.

If you really must upgrade - you can't beat either of these two for aftermarket support anyway. Bits are everywhere for them

My pick - find a early GC8 body with a blown motor, transplant a GDB motor and box. Win. Find an RA body if possible. Reckon it could be done for near $10k

But modernish as you've mentioned above, doesn't come in at $10k budget ready to play though.

I'm not disputing that the new ones are better.

But if you're looking at a $10k budget, and a minimum of $3k of that going into cage + seats, you have to be looking at a sub $7k buy price even in totally "as bought" race ready state. So if you're dropping another couple $k into stuff like brakes and diffs, then you're down to a $5k buy price.
