I think what we have learned from all the previous comments is that 10k WILL get you a slightly older possibly unreliable 4wd turbo car from the mid 90's or it will get you a late 90's ITR/CTR that while not being as exciting (in some peoples mind, not mine).

Tough choice, I would get the STI or EVO but ONLY if I had money to maintain it.

The ITR will get flogged each and every day and pretty much love it so I think thats the smart option.

Sorry I didn't realise that the $10k was total budget. Assumed that this was the allowable purchase price for the car  That certainly changes everything. A [Good] Rollcage and [Good] suspension alone will eat up almost half that before you even look at Brakes/Seats/Harnesses/Wheels/Tyres/Maintenance etc. That doesn't leave much for buying anything worthy of mention. I daresay even a DC2R with brakes/cage/suspension = $10k+

I'd rather get a good DC2R than a cheap Evo/Sti. Some things just aren't worth buying cheaply.

It'd be VERY close if you could do everything yourself
6 speed box and associated bits for a 6 speed transplant is $3750-4000+ gst
+ complete motor on top of that will be $4K perhaps more.
Even if your brought a rolled GDB from the auctions you'll be paying $6k+ for it.

Yeah, hence near. Though you could probably pick up a non registered shell for $2k, pick up a rolled GDB and do that. Though again, leaves no money for cage/suspension/tyres.

In summary, get an ITR

1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

Cheers for all the input gives me alot to think about, my budget of 10k is for the car only not the mods on top, that will be done over time where i feel things need upgrading/get worn out.
Some of those evos above look nice, would love to stretch to an evo 5 which could be posible if i sold my other toy, and which i probably dont need two but have worked so hard on it would be very hard to sell it

Hunt around, most subarus that age are pretty trashed would be hard to get a good one. you'll find a good st205 will be just as fast as a sti from around that period; mind you you will also have to hunt out a good st205, ive found some are fast and some are slow..i have had a fair few goes of them and have owned four of them,, thats my 50cents (:

No offence dude but a good sti from the late 90's will be FAR quicker than a good similarly stock st205 on the track, dont get me wrong, I LOVE st205's but they are not in the same league as the evo or sti from the same time period when it comes to track work.

The 205's weigh about 150kg more and make slightly less power

In my experience an ST205 is better matched to a normal WRX. The STI is a whole other kettle of fish. Those things are properly quick.

Yup, it's MAD considering you'd be paying $5k or more for a 4k powered Starlet rally car.

Obviously the Starlet is more suitable as a learner rally car, and will get good results in the 0-1300cc class ... but still ...

There are some remarkably good value competition cars out there. Though clearly they would be a bit tragic as a daily driver.

Possibly point to point vs a normal WRX, no chance against an STI imo.

Don't forget the years im talking about. Have driven more than one of each and found the 205s a much better car. Wasn't on track though.
To be honest I found those early stis to be a bit awful
later ones are much much better

That plus 5k of mods = better than spending 10k on stock car.

But then it's just a WRX again (it's not an Sti) ... it'd be way more interesting in rear drive format, and chances are you'd get a WRX for cheaper than that anyway albeit not in coupe body shape.

Fun car for $5k though!
