Hilux Diff service question

Postby Mike- » Thu Mar 22, 2012 6:00 pm

The diff in my hiace is leaking out the front where it bolts to the driveshaft. I think it's the pinion seal?

what parts and tools do i need to fix this?

i have a torque wrench and i bought the replacement pinion seal, but a mechanic said something about a collapseable washer.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Yeh man, there is a collapsable washer between the inner and outer pinion bearings. Basically if you are a backyarder you might get away with just taking the drive flange off (via 30mm staked nut) replace the seal and refit the drive flange, doing it up to the same point were you undid it. Problem being if there isnt the same amount of preload on the inner and outer bearings, it will cause premature wear. Tough call really, u could replace it and get away with it, or replace and destroy the bearings and end up doin a rebuild lol.

Ive done heaps of them just by removing the drive flange with the diff in place like YeMs said. But you have to make sure that you do the nut back up exactly the same as it was before hand.

Yep - just nip the nut back up nice and snug - DON'T go for the big Crush tighten with an enormous powerbar

Bit of locktight if you're wary, and re-stake the nut
