Help with a 1UZ conversion for an '87 MA70

This is my MA70 widebody, http://imgur.com/a/cprKo. She was my first car, and has been my pride and joy. After sitting in my driveway for far too long, I've decided that progress must be made on the V8 conversion I've been longing for for years. I'm a bit of a gearhead, and I've done a bit of work on cars, but I'm nowhere near the level of doing a full engine transplant. I've seen these conversions done before, so I know it can be done, and I have a basic idea of the parts/things i'll need to get a 1UZ in there.


So far I've got on the list:

Engine, loom, and ECU (obviously)
Clutch, fly, and bellhouse to attach to my w58 (I really cbf with a u1 bellhouse)
Headers (I'm not sure about this one, will stock headers fit?)
An exhaust system (again, not sure if I could throw in something from a different model toyota)
A radiator, 'cause the one in there is goneburgers.
And, ofcourse, engine mounts.


I have a basic set of tools, but nowhere solid to get this transplant done. I'd really appreciate input from some of you more experienced folk, because I don't trust my knowledge of cars well enough to attempt something like this on my own.

I think the best thing you can do is just start doing it!

When i did my 2JZ swap i was feeling nervous and doubting myself but got into it, took my time, got it done. I work all over the country and barely have time to work on cars but managed to get it done.

I appreciate your encouragement but when I say I have nowhere to work on it, nor the tools or expertise to do so, I really do mean it. I don't want to spend 5 or 6 thousand dollars and end up with a useless engine transplant, and I wouldn't have the slightest clue where to start. Hence why i'm asking here!

I sold the uz conversion I had bought to do my transplant. had everything from hydraulic fans to gearbox tail housing. You missed out, bro!

Biggest problem you'll have is the sump placement, the front sump (by far the most common) will foul on your stearing rack. I can't speak for certain, but you'd probably need a rear sump. Also, you may have to get a oil filter relocation kit, it appeared that it would also foul. Clearance around the rear of the engine was a bit of an issue also, so be prepared to have to alter your firewall. Factory headers are a no-go, iirc, i had the log style and there was definitely some stearing colomn-header kinky shit going on.

Flywheel and bell wil cost you a bit, got no option but to go custom, unless you want to re-drill a 3S fly and use an adapter plate. (rude).

No amount of telling you how to do it is going to get it done. Its a job that'll have more problems than posters here have STIs, you just got to jump in and start sorting through them.

Also: visit lextreme and become fluent in reading pin-outs, finding a complete loom is difficult.

I have a crashed soarer thats still drivable (although i wouldnt as its completly $&#$%, but the engine is sweet. make me an offer

The best advice i can give is if you're converting anything car related whether it be seat mounts, engine transplant etc is to plan, plan, plan!! When i didi the 2t transplant in my old sr coupe i had the engine side by side, and maesured everything critical like driveshaft length, gearbox length, engine mounting position height etc. Even did a hydraulic conversion for the clutch master and slave cylinder that passed the cert inspection. The best thing is to have a plan of what you want to achieve, mostly it's not difficult. just have to think about what you're doing, and make sure your measurements are precise. Nothing worse than locating the engine too high in the engine bay

Okay, so I've found this webpage here http://www.lextreme.com/supra-swap.html, it details pretty much everything that needs to be done to fit a V8 into a 70 series supra.

It looks like a lot of work, does anyone have any idea what this kind of job would cost me?

This is only to give you an idea of the cost to pay someone for a reliable setup, for shitzo ill base it on a manual 1UZ conversion

> cost of engine $1500-$3000

> custom made engine and gearbox mounts, modify cross member etc $750-1200

> custom sump, remote filter, lines etc $750 (modified sump approx $150)

> to go manual gearbox, $450-1500

> adaptor plate, flywheel and clutch 1500 (or heavy duty clutch, billet flywheel and cast bell housing $2500)

> wiring, factory ecu upto $1500
or to go aftermarket ecu, wire in and basic tune approx 3k+

> exhaust from factory headers back $600

> drive shaft $150-450

> speedo, cable, wiring configuration $150-600

> cooling system, new radiator, coolant, hoses, fan $550-750

> fuel system, efi pump, efi lines, fuel reg, $650-800

> air intake, pod filter, throttle body mod (to remove all the traction control jizm ) $350

> sometimes relocation of powersteering and alternator are needed, allow approx $150-400

why are you after the 1uz in particular?

im not saying doing do it. but wouldnt a 1JZGTE be a cheaper, easier option with a similar power result?

I just got the idea stuck in my head, I've realised now that it'll end up being one of those projects with endless problems, so i think I'll end up doing a vvti 1jz transplant. here's hoping it wont be nearly as expensive...
