Speedhut GPS Speedometers - Who's keen?

Postby MrOizo » Tue Mar 27, 2012 12:14 pm

I have been looking at getting a newer speedo to work with the MKIV sender and came across these SpeedHut speedos. I think the fact there is a Odometer is cool and something i dont have anymore.

Also on my car, in the factory gauge cluster there are 3 gauges not working and i am ready to make a custom cluster simplifying it and de-cluttering the A-pillar.

They offer a electronic sender version or a GPS version (Has turn indicators and high beam LED's too!).

I know the installation will be much easier - power, antenna has good view of the sky and the dimmer/illumination to be hooked up.

Only problem i can think of is when being in a built environment and there is limited/no signal. In NZ there arent too many tunnels so shouldnt be too much of a issue.

What do you all think about these and if you want some let me know - i could organise a group buy.

At this stage, i'm keen on the Speedo, Tacho, Fuel Level, Voltage and maybe water (i have the DEFI water but in the dash might be more cooler-er!)

Gauge faces are customisable and can have ANY logo you want including TRD, SUPRA, TOYOTA, MR2, GT-FOUR etc and these are mostly on file too.

Have you looked at whether they'll be legal? I think you'd struggle to get a testing station WOF with them, but might be able to through someone less stringent. I would also expect that in heavily built-up areas like Auckland CBD the accuracy will be very poor

GPS speedo not legal for road use.

Drive through a tunnel.

Note 1 Speedometer means an instrument in a motor vehicle that continuously indicates to the driver the forward speed of the
vehicle in either kilometres per hour (km/h) or miles per hour (mph). For clarification: This definition does not include the
speed provided by a GPS system.

PHR makes a nice set. Not sure if the GPS one is purely GPS based, or GPS + speed sensor based. Not cheap, but very nice nonetheless.

Fair comments about the legalities. I have a Apexi RSM which i used for when i got my cert. If i got a working speedo, hey i wouldnt need the RSM on the top of the steering column.

I was more keen on the non-GPS version but speedhut have suggested the GPS one and complicated things!

Girvs, they look pretty much the same as the speedhut ones. Speedhut claim to make them on site so may do them for PHR too?

Yeah never looked at your link till now Adrian, yep, very similar in nature. Just change of face plate really. I am a fan of the shift light being in the gauges as its quite subtle. However I think the brightness of those LED's at night could be a tad annoying like this video. But thats possibly just camera sensitivity.
