Has another tried making their own soda blaster?

Really quite like the idea of one for stripping back paint on rusty old cars....
Better than hand sanding anyway

Just use paint stripper

Panels/shell. Paint stripper wont remove rust and flakey shit though.

pretty much. just need a finer seive to reuse the blasting medium to keep the rust flakes out.

Blasting is sweet, but not ideal for big things (at home). I built a sandblast unit (use garnet though) and the amount of material it spits out is insane. It's all recycled so not a problem. But if you're trying to do big panels / whole shell that's going to be a big mess. Just my opinion though. I think proper rust will survive soda in any case.

Yes it can make a mess. I plan to use plastic sheets to close off the work area.
Yes major rust will, but it cleans up scale etc with out marking good steel, and also lets you work delicate areas with no damage.
Using grit can warp and damage the surface of panels. Soda blasting can remove paint leaving a good surface underneath. It's sounding a lot more appealing than sanding
Seeing it appears I can now just use a sand blasting tool, It will be pretty easy to give it a go and see how it works out.


Proper rust will be dealt with grinders and welders
