Yeah what a joke, everywhere seems to be out to screw you. I will consider all the recomendations and get a written quote, an insit at the time a quote is exactly how much i pay, not plus 200 at the end because they underestimated the job . I will probablyu give them something in writting aswell just so that it is crystal clear

They could end up over quoting to give a bit of wiggle room then?

Sorry to hear you feel that way bro..

There is a lot of genuine places out there, but yes there are also some dodgey ones. IMO more good than bad not the other way around as you say.

Not everyone is out to screw you but It just goes to show you how unfamiliar they are with the job at hand.

I dont know how w/shops get away with that, If we quote a price and it takes a bit longer we will just wear the down time or we will quote it higher and charge less if no hold ups, customers like that and It builds a good reputation and gets praise from our customers.

A happy customer will tell 2 people an unhappy one will tell 10, thats the motto we go by.

yeah think ill ask for a quote, get it, then ask for ti written so he cant go back on it

not many places that will do a good job. i often help my friends out by redoing mechanical repairs they have paid to have done tha thave been done half arsed! its sad the pricks out there doing the work, the geddes place was "mta assured" which seems to be a way of giving a false sence of security to customers

I think that there are plenty of great workshops out there, but, I have heard of the odd one which isn't - and many good shops will have a shocker now and then. I would have thought (hoped?) that the good shops outnumber the bad ones hugely though.

The vast majority of my new customers become regulars, so whether thats a reflection on me, or my competition, I am not sure...

Just thought i'd add my 2 cents, and say muffler shop in hamilton...

Asked for a mandrel bent exhaust for the RX7, it was all crush bends, and what looked like scrap left overs they had lying around... Because the last peice looks like a downpipe turned sideways, as it had an O2 sensor fitting, but blocked off in by bird shit welds.

A quote is a quote. They legally cannot go over that by 10% (could be 15%) without your permission. If they do you do not pay. They can remove the extra parts if you don't pay. At their cost. So if they try and charge you extra tell them to stick it. People are letting themselves be screwed.

Verbal quote is the same. But becomes a he said I said situation. So get it in writing.

There is no 10%, the price quoted is the price you pay.

Bear in mind that there is a huge difference between a quote and an estimate.

In either case, if the price was going to blow out then they should have at least called.

Yeah an estimate is not binding. But they should still contact you if it's going to be exceeded

Yeah, just saying that often people get an estimate and treat it as a quote. Hence a lot of places simply don't do quotes.

For example, someone comes in with a noise that is obviously a wheel bearing or something like that and you quote a price to replace the bearing and find out the flange is stuffed then they'll say "but you quoted me this much to fix that noise".
