Nup, only on deceleration, worse in 4/5/6th gears than the others
It's quieter than before, and the yard I bought it off have a hatch with the 6-speed in it, so will drive that on the weekend to see if it's different
Might ask for a gearbox swap if it's quiet, and let them sort this one out in their own time.

Might have missed it but is there a reason why it has to be this particular car from this particular dealer? I mean, they're hardly rare cars - couldn't you just go to another dealer and get one that doesn't have a problem? Even if they fix the problem, you never know what follow on effects may pop up a year later?

If the noise is rattly more than a whine, then it is possible that the springs are too hard in the clutch centre or the clutch has solid centre. How does the noise behave when you put the clutch in?

The one with the 2ZZGE and six speed are not that common.
we looked for quite a while for one.

Agreed.
This one was in the right place at the right time, Hawkes Bay isn't that great for car selection
Noise stops when clutch depressed, and clutch is light to press in
I'll drive another one, as I say, and base my decision on fixing again or swapping gearboxes on that drive.
The sound is a while, no rattle or metallic noise at all, it's only on deceleration, and still sounds like a rumbling bearing to me

Gisborne is worse. I just looked on Trade Me and lined up a whole bunch of vehicles to look at. Two weekends away and had a new car with no dealing with the local rip off merchants.

Interesting... I thought my car was a little loud on deceleration. but got used to it.

If it helps, I'm coming to Napier this weekend to see the parents. I'm not super knowledgeable about car parts, but you might want to hear what mine sounds like?

When the Aussies were hot on these things (sold new as Sportivo) they had frequest gearbox failures. These were documented on the Toyota Owners forums. We sold a good many TOM's chrome moly flywheels and those that used them reported a vast improvement in the smoothness of the drivetrain.
You'd have to do a search to find it if you were interested.

They do spin the bearings in the diff.
not sure if theres a remedy for it yet

It's going back to be fixed properly next week, this time it better come back 100% good......

Yes, very good.
Was out of my hands, so couldn't really demand they replace a perfectly good new clutch, but turns out that's exactly what they did.
Either way, good outcome for me!
