Masterton drags fund raiser April 14th/15th

Postby Mr Ree » Tue Apr 03, 2012 9:58 am

Hi guys,
I just noticed that the Masterton airport is holding one last drag meet to raise funds before the new track is built.

Now Im keen to go down the old strip one last time and have been trying to find out what classes they will be running, and what the rules are that apply to each class. Ive been to their website and cant seem to find the required info apart from a picture of the NZDRA manual, so thought I would ask advice on here incase anyone is in the know.

Lately Ive read in a few places that some drags in NZ are now being run based on tyre width brackets rather than NA, rwd turbo, 4wd turbo etc etc so I want to know what to expect before I turn up as last time I entered my JZA80, I was put in with a group of 5 4WD turbo mitis evo's, as there werent many imports at the meet, so they caught me off guard and had I known that was going to be the way, I might have tried to get some dot rated slicks to try and get off the line a bit better hehe

Any info appreciated :) Thanks

Just get amongst it and race. Its great fun.

You will be lucky to break 13s anyway.

Go into C8 (DYO) class. Dont let the entry people tell you to go into heads up 2wd turbo, there's some 11second skylines around...

In C8 you'll be up against V8s, imports and some quick cars. Best part is, you don't have to be quick to do well.

Entry fee is $50, $25 for weekend licence and $20 per day to get in the gate. So $115 for the weekend.

If my headgasket issue doesn't get any worse I'll be there in a purple turbo crx :)

Basically you will have two options:

C2 - 2wd Turbo or C8 Superstreet which is DYO

They dont run tyre width classes or anything at MMP basically as long as you have a Wof and Rego and your tyres are street or DOT rated then you will be fine.

I will be there, my clutch explosion means I will now be pushing to race but am still going to try get it back going again. I will be running in C8 if I am racing.

You are right mate, it is lots of fun. I have only been there 3 times previously, and everytime I have left grinning, but wishing that I had a more suitable suspension setup, as my cars set up for track work and as such has very firm shocks and springrate = almost no compliance off the launch pad.

And you are probably right again, based on my previous experiences, I doubt I will break into the 12's, but given Im running ancient rock hard street tyres, I figure I may as well try and give myself a fighting chance off the line with some softer rear suspension.

I thought about going into dyo time but to be honest, unless I had some tyres worth their name, I dont think Id be anywhere near consistent enough yet to be successful, although in saying that, Im not going there with any desires or being under any illusions that I could win anything, its all about having fun legally and trying to beat my previous PB.

Ill look out for your crx and come say hi :)

Thanks for that info regarding the tyres, now I know what to expect.

What car do you run, so I know who to look out for.

how would you like some nitto drag radials, 275/40/17, for the weekend?

Ive got a White GT starlet. Isnt looking good at this stage, found some nasty wear on the input shaft. Unless i can find a cheap stock GT box quickly might be struggling to have anything to race.

i got told there would be no 2wd turbo class running, only the DYO class(C 8 ), which is really hard given that all the import dudes just want to go faster and faster, not exactly the same time each run. also the lights don't count down ONE TWO THREE GREEN like C2, but all 3 yellow then green, which again is poor for turbo equipped cars.
i hope i got told WRONG!

Thats usually only the case at a National meet. MMP have always run the Import classes at Comp meets but this one could be different. DYO is much more fun anyway.

Thanks alot for the offer, whats your opinion of them? Your 60ft time in your sig looks good ;) Every time I see JZA80 and drag radial in the same sentence, its usually followed soon after by the words, wheel hop.

Interesting, and kind of confirms my reason for this thread. Even though its just for shits and giggles, I would hate to get eliminated after one run because I broke out of my DYO time.

I'm sure last time I ran C8 (last season) it was a 1,2,3 tree (comp tree?).

Tonight I decided to do the headgasket on the crx, should hopefully have it sussed by the weekend :)
