Police Stolen Vehicles website

This has gone live and I thought it might be a good idea to sticky a link on Toyspeed.

At first I thought it was 'the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff' but it looks like you can search engine numbers too which could be handy.

I searched for my old 200sx and yep, its still 'STOLEN'.

Anything to slow down car theft in NZ is a good thing right?

How hard/expensive would it really be to equip all police cars with cameras and some software that recognises number plates and automatically searches that database for a match then alerts the officer to a possible stolen vehicle? Much better than relying on the officer to know of all the stolen cars or something that looks suspicious.
I realise that they would probably use the number plate recognition system for other things, that people may not like....

That only works if the thieves are still driving the cars around (not very often this happens) AND they've left the car's plates on it (even less often). Most stolen cars in NZ are never seen again.
